DORIS DUKE FOUNDATION FOR ISLAMIC ART BUILDING BRIDGES GRANTS  APPLICATION PROCESS  Grants will be awarded through a competitive panel review process. All applications will be reviewed by external advisors composed of those with knowledge of the field  DDFIA staff will not participate in the review discussions or influence outcomes of those deliberations

DORIS DUKE FOUNDATION FOR ISLAMIC ART BUILDING BRIDGES GRANTS  APPLICATION PROCESS: KEY DATES  Final proposals are due Friday, December 12, 2014 at 4pm EST  Review process to be completed by 1 st week of February 2015  Reviewer recommended grants will be awarded in February 2015  Anticipated start dates for funded projects is March 1, 2015 onwards

DORIS DUKE FOUNDATION FOR ISLAMIC ART BUILDING BRIDGES GRANTS  APPLICATION PROCESS: PROJECT AREAS NOT FUNDED  Requests from individuals  The development, publication, and/or distribution of books or reports  Initiatives based exclusively on scholarly research or scholarly presentations  Initiatives that focus solely on historical, as opposed to contemporary, Muslim arts and cultures  Film production or distribution of a single film will generally not be competitive

DORIS DUKE FOUNDATION FOR ISLAMIC ART BUILDING BRIDGES GRANTS  APPLICATION PROCESS: PROJECT AREAS NOT FUNDED  Projects that support a performance by a single artist or a single performance production will generally not be competitive. Funding opportunities for single artists in the fields of contemporary dance, jazz, theater and multi-disciplinary performing arts are available through the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation’s Arts Program. To learn more:  The program will not support direct costs for the development and installation of exhibitions. Public programs associated with exhibitions are eligible

DORIS DUKE FOUNDATION FOR ISLAMIC ART BUILDING BRIDGES GRANTS  APPLICATION PROCESS: COMMON ERRORS TO AVOID  Not following instructions including textual formatting  Not answering all the questions in the application  Submitting an application before clearly determining how the need defined will be addressed through an intervention  Not being articulate about project concept and the best way to implement it  Not having a completely thought through outcome/result  Not selecting the target population strategically and describing why that population was identified  Not having a qualitative and quantitative evaluation plan to measure impact  Inflating the applicant organization’s position in the field

DORIS DUKE FOUNDATION FOR ISLAMIC ART BUILDING BRIDGES GRANTS What distinguishes a strong project?

DORIS DUKE FOUNDATION FOR ISLAMIC ART BUILDING BRIDGES GRANTS  PROJECT CONCEPT There are myriad ways that organizations may design, structure and implement dynamic projects with arts and media arts Organizations should draw upon their strengths to develop proposals that outline a strong hypothesis using:  Core capabilities  Audience knowledge  Resources  Subject knowledge

DORIS DUKE FOUNDATION FOR ISLAMIC ART BUILDING BRIDGES GRANTS  PROJECT CONCEPT: PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT As you move forward in your thinking about a project, keep in mind that it may include but is not limited to:  Development of a new project based on past experience of successful international artistic programming  Expansion of an existing project that will be a larger scale or an enhancement to the current version of the project

DORIS DUKE FOUNDATION FOR ISLAMIC ART BUILDING BRIDGES GRANTS  PROJECT CONCEPT: Desired outcomes of the intervention. Will it:  Facilitate attitudinal change and advance critical thinking through the program?  Expand target population’s experience of a people and world that has been inaccessible except through news headlines?  Provide opportunities to discover rich, new art forms and through that interactions and connection with Muslim artists?

DORIS DUKE FOUNDATION FOR ISLAMIC ART BUILDING BRIDGES GRANTS  PROJECT CONCEPT: What strategies to address project goals?  Will the project serve to create interaction between audience and artists?  Is there a clearly defined target audience and statement of desired outcomes for your chosen subjects - the broader American population and the minority population including American Muslims - for your project?  What are you hoping to accomplish?  How will you know what impact will look like and if you succeed?  How will you select artists to serve as mediums for engagement and interaction?  What kind of format would work best for your subjects? What kind setting/situation will they experience the program in and how can it be enhanced for maximum benefit?  Have the best technologies been identified and engaged to communicate widely?

DORIS DUKE FOUNDATION FOR ISLAMIC ART BUILDING BRIDGES GRANTS  PROJECT MANAGEMENT  Are the project team’s roles and responsibilities clearly defined and articulated?  Is there an ability to manage internally through a set of controls any challenges or unforeseen/wild card developments as they arise?  What is the purpose of project partnerships? In what way do they strengthen the project or resources? Are they complementary and beneficial?

DORIS DUKE FOUNDATION FOR ISLAMIC ART BUILDING BRIDGES GRANTS  PROJECT EVALUATION  How have expected outcomes been defined? What evidence/signs of progress will be provided that will indicate the project’s effectiveness? What form will they take – anecdotal stories, quantitative measurements? Others?  How will data be collected?  How will it measure change comprehensively– attitudes before experiencing a program and/or after?  Can evaluation be designed so that it is built into programs?

DDFIA: BUILDING BRIDGES PROGRAM  PROJECT REVIEW Reviewers panel will weigh:  Project’s quality of vision and rigor in thought for its concept  Program quality and impact on the focus/selected audience  Organization’s implementation ability  Organization’s financial stability

DDFIA: BUILDING BRIDGES PROGRAM  For further information:  Questions about the webinar may be addressed to: Jeremy Williams,  Questions about the logistics including, deadline dates, online submissions or any technical issues may be addressed to Lillian:  Any additional questions about the program may be addressed to: Zeyba,
