Supranationalism

What is supranationalism? Supranationalism occurs when 3 or more states agree to cooperate under a large organization they create together. For supranationalism to work, the states must agree to give up some power and follow this organization. This is possible because of centripetal forces: events and issues that bring states together.

Question? What are examples of events or issues have brought nations together to cooperate?

What are the types of centripetal forces? Shared military goals create supranational organizations like NATO. NATO was orginaly created to protect Western Europe from the communist military alliance of the Warsaw Pact in East Europe. Shared political goals create supranational organizations like the United Nations. League of Nations was the first after WWI, but the U.S. and other countries didn’t join, so it failed. It did create an Permanent Court of Int’l Justice and also the Law of the Sea for ocean boundaries. U.N. was created after WWII to prevent war. Shared economic goals create supranational organizations like NAFTA or the European Union NAFTA is an agreement between U.S., Mexico and Canada to not tax each other.

What is the purpose of the E.U.? European Union is an economic supranational organization that seeks to help its members (states) develop. Free trade and open borders between states Most use the same currency: the euro Common agricultural and industrial policies Richer countries help poorer ones The E.U. is the world’s richest market.

Summary Create a tree map for the different centripetal forces with an example underneath each.
