3 Organizations of Global Power
Countries give up a portion of their authority (power) in order to gain closer relationships with other countries militarily (allies) and economically ($).

4 Main Objectives: These 3 organizations were set up to prevent another global conflict like World War II: POLITICAL & MILITARY ALLIANCES: United Nations (UN): maintain peace and security North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO): protect Europe against possible invasion from the Soviet Union ECONOMIC ALLIANCE: European Union (EU): European countries joined together to create stronger economies so they could compete with other major economic powers like the United States.

5 United Nations (UN) Maintain international peace and security
Purposes of the UN: Maintain international peace and security Develop friendly relations between countries Solve international problems such as civil war, conflict between countries, famine, genocide, etc… Examples: Create peace-keeping armies to prevent people/countries from fighting each other (like a referee) 192 member countries Headquarters in New York City Main objective: Peace-keeping alliance

6 European Union (EU) Purposes of the EU: European countries joined together after WWII to create stronger economies The EU countries together can better compete with other major economic powers like the United States and China. 6 original members – currently, 28 members In 2016, the people of Great Britain voted to leave the EU (Brexit) because they did not want other European countries telling them what to do Main objective: Economic alliance

7 North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
Purposes of NATO: Military alliance created after WWII (1949) by countries in western Europe and North America Original purpose – to protect its members from a possible attack from the Soviet Union (“Containment”) All members are DEMOCRACIES Has been the MOST important U.S. alliance for the past 68 years 12 original member…currently, 26 members Main objective: military alliance

8 NATO Treaty – Article 5 “The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all…” No NATO member was ever attacked during the Cold War – it never had to use its military forces The first (and only) time a NATO member was attacked was… September 11, 2001

9 NATO – For OR Against ?
