The Northeast Region The Plentiful Sea Chapter 4- Lesson 3 Pgs. 116-121 Chapter Review: pgs. 122-123

FOCUS ON THE MAIN IDEA: Chesapeake Bay and other bays in the Northeast provide seafood for millions.

VOCABULARY WORDS: PLACES: Chesapeake Bay Delaware Bay Massachusetts Bay VOCABULARY WORDS: bay- part of a sea or lake that cuts into a coastline. crab pot- a large wire cage with several sections that crabs swim into but from which they cannot escape.

inlet- a narrow opening in a coastline watermen- men or women who gather different kinds of seafood and fish in different seasons.

This is a picture of a crab pot.

Great Shellfish Bay Chesapeake Bay got its name from the Native American word Chesepiook, which means “Great Shellfish Bay” Maryland surrounds part of Chesapeake Bay and is part of the Middle Atlantic states. Others are New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Chesapeake Bay is rich in crabs, oysters, clams, and other shellfish. About 200 different kinds of fish live in the bay as well.

Many families in the Chesapeake Bay area earn their livings harvesting the sea. This is due to the abundance of fish. BAY vs. INLET Reread pg. 117 in your Soc. Studies book. Compare and Contrast a bay and an inlet. Draw a double bubble or a venn diagram.

Challenges to Chesapeake Bay Pollution of the land around Chesapeake Bay threatens the bay’s fish and shellfish. Some factories around the bay dump waste onto the land polluting the soil. When it rains or snows, the polluted soil washed into that drain into the bay. Pollution also harms the natural habitat, making it difficult for fish to reproduce. This results in a decrease in their numbers. Overfishing also challenges the balance of life in the bay.

“Save the Bay” An organization called “The Chesapeake Bay Foundation” is working to educate people about the environment. Their slogan is “Save the Bay” REVIEW List the factors that harm the population of Chesapeake Bay. Come up with another slogan/picture to help save the bay.

Other Northeast Bays North of the Chesapeake Bay is the Delaware Bay. It forms part of the border between New Jersey and Delaware. Oyster fishing is popular in this bay. The Massachusetts Bay is near the city of Boston. Many other cities and towns around Massachusetts Bay serve as tourist, fishing, and boating centers.

DELAWARE BAY MASSACHUSETTS BAY

LESSON SUMMARY Chesapeake Bay is one major bay of the Atlantic Ocean and a rich source of fish and shellfish. Pollution and overfishing challenge Chesapeake Bay Several other bays(Delaware Bay and Massachusetts Bay) are along the coast of the Northeast.
