Regions of the United States The Northeast

 The Northeast is known for its beautiful landscape- a result of the geography and climate of the region. -Niagara Falls (NY) -Farmlands/Deciduous Forests (PA)

- Ski Resort/Coniferous Forests (VT) - Beach (NJ)

- New York City (NY) - Philadelphia (PA)

 The Northeast has few natural resources.- (compared to other regions) - The Appalachian Mountains - thin, rocky soils and steep hills (rugged) - make some parts of the Northeast a challenge for farmers  Few minerals - except for Pennsylvania (rich in coal)

 Water - one major resource that has turned the Northeast into a center of trade, commerce, and industry.  Natural Harbors - The North Atlantic supported a thriving fishing industry

 Northeast Rivers - the many rivers of the Northeast- including the Connecticut and the Hudson- have provided power used for machinery.  Precipitation- combined with the hilly terrain- keeps the rivers of the region flowing. - water wheels convert water power into machine power

 During 1800’s - Many factories were built near waterfalls along the region’s rivers. - River valleys were trade routes, railroad routes, - and later highway routes.  By the 1900’s - Most productive manufacturing region in the world.

 Outline your own notes for The Megalopolis section on page 159 - What is a Megalopolis? - What events helped to create this? - What are some advantages/disadvantages?

 Megalopolis - based on the Greek meaning “a very large city” - coastal cities began to spread and run together. - the suburbs of one city stretched to the suburbs of the next - example: area from Boston to Washington D.C

 Cities along the Atlantic coast - First, had harbors of international trade and centers of shipbuilding  As Manufacturing grew…. - Industries needed workers - population began to grow *people moved to factory towns to work industrial jobs*

 In the 1800’s- Europeans immigrated to the United States - took advantage of jobs in the Northeast - escaped political oppression and economic hardships

 Advantages - dominant centers of American business and industry  Disadvantages - area might run short water - run short of facilities for waste disposal - higher taxes (decrease in population)

 Businesses and industries continue to thrive in the Northeast - Ex: New York is still the business capital of the world.
