What are the British doing? British cut the Trans-Atlantic cable Done so any information coming from Germany to the U.S. would have to go through Britain. Britain could feed us wrong information

German Submarine Warfare U-Boat- unterseeboot- or submarine is undetectable issued no warnings U.S. considers this uncivilized yet we still remain neutral

Why did Britain do it? Done to encourage anti-German feeling in the U.S. Get us on the side of the allies. We could turn the tide of the war by finally entering into it.

The U.S. and President Wilson Germany sinks passenger liners We stick with preparing for war but our neutrality is weakening

Sussex pledge German U-Boats will warn ships before attacking them Germany does not want us in the war, and does this to make the U.S. happy How long will it last?

Propaganda begins When the Luisitania is sunk. Europeans unite in anger against Germany and Austria- Hungary. The Luisitania was a passenger liner sunk off the coast of Ireland

What is Propaganda? publicity to promote something: information or publicity put out by an organization or government to spread and promote a policy, idea, doctrine, or cause

German Propaganda

British Propaganda

U.S. Propaganda Our propaganda was used to create support for the war effort Raise money for the troops- Liberty bonds

February 1917 Germany breaks the Sussex pledge U.S. says, “German submarine warfare has gone to far.” Wilson wants to arm our merchant ships and protect our trade. Some feel this will bring us into the war. To avoid war, anti-war senators filibuster- or refuse to stop talking on the Senate floor to prevent a vote. No war for us, yet.

Then the Zimmerman Note is uncovered

What is the Zimmerman Note? A letter from Germany to Mexico, encouraging Mexico to join the war on their side. U.S. does not like this at all Why?

Why did this get our attention? We feel safe with oceans between us and the fighting. But Mexico shares a border with us We cannot have an enemy this close!!!!

And another important event is happening on the other side of the world. Will this finally draw us into the war?

The Russian Revolution Russian troops are leaving to help with the revolution at home. Czar Nicholas II abdicates the monarchy is replaced with a republican government we like this government and feel we could ally ourselves with Russia now.

What happens next? The Germans sink 3 American ships We have finally had enough! March 1917, Congress votes for war April 6, 1917 President Wilson signs the war resolution.

The U.S. is at War “It is a fearful thing to lead this great peaceful people into war, the most terrible and disastrous of all wars, civilization itself seeming to be in the balance. But the right is more precious than peace.” ---Woodrow Wilson

What do the sides look like now? Central Powers Austria-Hungary Germany Turkey Bulgaria Allies Serbia Russia France Great Britain Italy and finally the U.S.

What will our importance be to this war? –Fresh men –supplies –money –technology –new military leadership
