PSSD Numeracy Project

PSSD Numeracy Goals  Staff in Prairie Spirit are participating in a listen and learn year, finding out more about numeracy programs in our schools so that we might better align approaches across the division.  By the end of 2014, 50% of the K-8 schools in the division will have used a diagnostic tool to assess their students’ numeracy skills.  By the end of June 2014, 40% of teaching staff will participate in collaborative professional learning.

Process to date (Strengths)  Reviewed Divisional School Plans (areas of focus include basic facts, mental math, and problem solving)  Create a tool to build a school profile, based on research  Met with individual school principals who indicated a numeracy goal on their school plan  Discussed current practices  Discussed numeracy resources and shared new resources  Reviewed the numeracy profile form  Lesson Study  Manitou Elementary School  Prairie Mountain Elementary  St. Claude Complex

Challenges and Next Steps  Continue to develop and research appropriate diagnostic numeracy tools  Support schools based on the feedback from schools (school profile)  Implement diagnostic tools and analyze their effectiveness  Continue to promote professional practice that includes collaborative planning and discussions to improve student learning and engagement
