Safety Message White Sands is a hazardous test facility –Hazards include: Hypergolic propellants Toxic laboratory chemicals Cryogenic liquids High pressure gas systems Heavy equipment Industrial hazards Gratings and uneven/elevated surfaces Environmental conditions Critters (rattlesnakes, scorpions, spiders, etc.)

Safety Message (cont’d) Cautions: –Do not reach where you cannot see –Watch where you step –Notify escort if you see any critters –In the event of an emergency, follow your escort’s instructions

WSTF Mission Provide the expertise and infrastructure to test and evaluate spacecraft materials, components, and propulsion systems to enable the safe exploration and use of space

Protective Services Mission Statement The Mission of NASA White Sands Protective Services is to insure the protection of NASA and site tenant personnel, property, information, facilities, and operations, from all internal and external threats.

WSTF Overview Constructed in 1962 to support Apollo Project Subsidiary Unit of NASA Johnson Space Center Occupies 28 square miles of the SW corner of WSMR Annual budget is ~ $80 million ~ 56 NASA ~ 450 contractor personnel Large buffer zone and controlled remote property for hazardous testing Moderate desert climate ideal for year-round testing Existing environmental permits in place for hazardous testing
