Presentation transcript:

Spelling practice activities There are lots of ways to practise and learn spellings other than the look, write, check method. Choose the method that helps you the most - this may be a different one for each word.

First write each word in pencil. Then trace over each word three times. Each time you trace, you must use a DIFFERENT colour. Trace neatly and you will see a rainbow! (Why not investigate to find out what media creates the best rainbow effect. Is it coloured pencils, crayons or felt tip pens?)

Write your spelling words forwards and then backwards. Write neatly! Example: where erehw

“Pyramid write” your spelling words. You must write neatly! *Example: home h ho hom home

First write your spelling words in a list. Then write them in ABC order. For an extra bonus, write your words in reverse ABC order!

Write your spelling words two times. First write in regular letters. Then write the words again in squiggly letters!

Write each of your spelling words. You will need a blue coloured pencil. Trace over the vowels in each word with your blue coloured pencil. Vowels = a e i o u

Write your spelling words in bubble letters. After you write your words in bubble letters, colour them in.

Write each spelling word three times. First, write each word in pencil. Second write each word in crayon. Third, write each word in pen. You MUST write neatly!

Each letter has a value. *Consonants are worth 10. *Vowels are worth 5. Write your spelling words. Then add up the value of each spelling word. Example- said = 30

Write your spelling words in dots. Then connect the dots by tracing over them with a coloured pencil or pen.

Write your spelling words two times each. First, write each word in UPPERCASE letters. Second, write each word in lowercase letters. *Example- SLIDEslide

Write each of your spelling words. Write each letter using a different coloured pencil! *Example- colourful

Write each spelling word and then write at least two words made from the same letters that is hidden inside the word. Example: slide side lie lid led etc.

First write your spelling words the way you usually do it. Then, try writing the list with your other hand!

Write your spelling words in a list, but replace all the vowels with a line. Then go back to the beginning of your list and see if you can fill in the correct missing vowels.

Write your spelling words in a list, but replace all the consonants with a line. Then go back to the beginning of your list and see if you can fill in the correct missing consonants.

This method is very useful for words that contain silent letter such as gnome, knock, Wednesday, environment. When you hear these words spell them by pronouncing all the syllables in the written form of the word, including those pesky silent letters. For example: for gnome say g nome for knock say k nock for Wednesday say Wed nes day for environment say en vi ron ment If it helps say the silent letter really loud – but in a spelling test make sure you do it in your head!

Write silly sentences using a spelling word in each sentence. Please underline your spelling words! Write neatly! Example: My dog wears a blue and purple dress when he takes a bath.

Write sentences using your spelling words. You may use more than one word in a sentence, but you must write at least 10 sentences. Underline your spelling words.

There are lots of free resources on the internet that will help you learn and check out spelling rules. A couple of these are included below – if running this PowerPoint just click on the icons to open or alternatively access the downloaded documents from our school website. Single page summary of the most common rules. A detailed set of rules in illustrated poster style.
