Speaking In groups of four, talk about what good citizenship and equality mean to you. Explain how you think black students and white students felt during the Civil Rights Movement. Do you think they felt the same about equality or not?

Art To honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we are going to make a rainbow pin. This pin shows us that people of all colors are part of one community of people and we must all cooperate and work together for our community to be successful. Writing Now that we have discussed the differences between the north and the south in the United States during this time, we are going to write a story. When you write your story, imagine that you have just moved to Mississippi from a northern state. How are things different, and how are you treated? How do you treat others? Write about your experiences. We will hang your stories in the hallway next week.

Drama Pretend that you are growing up in the south in the early 1960s. With your group, act out how you would have felt if you were one of the children in A Sweet Smell of Roses.

Reading The civil rights movement was not just about African American’s rights. It also dealt with women’s rights and other issues. Go to the library and find more books about Civil Rights to read. Be prepared to share your book of choice with the class.

Viewing Today, we are going to view a film about some of the great leaders of the Civil Rights Movement such as Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Jackie Robinson
