1 African American Explorers and Leaders as Heroes
Unit 6: Lesson 4, Part 3 Objective: Students will be able to explain how African American educators were heroes to their community by engaging in conversation, looking at historic photos, videos, and by responding to the topic. 2 What is a hero? A hero is a special helper. This person is liked and admired for courageous and great things. A hero can help one person or many people! A male is called a hero. A female is called a heroine.

What is an explorer? An explorer looks for new information. What is a leader? A leader is someone who has a vision and guides and directs others to follow them. What kinds of things can an explorer look for? (Turn and Talk) What are some things an explorer can find?

Turn and Talk Born ( ) in Maryland He was the first African American explorer to travel to the North Pole He traveled with Robert Peary on adventures around the world.

How was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. a hero? Born (1961- present) in Honolulu, Hawaii He is the first African American President of the United States of America Before being elected as the president, he was a community organizer and elected senator of Illinois He has worked hard to create many programs to help healthcare, and early education How is president Barack H.
