5 Segregation Segregation-white Southerners tried to separate the races Also known as Jim Crow. Starting in 1877, laws were passed that called for certain places for “whites” and “colored” Separate public facilities The things that African Americans had wasn’t very nice because they didn’t have a lot of money Signs were put up to separate races for over 75 years Voting rights were taken away-this went against the15 th Amendment of the Constitution.

6 Segregation in the North Early 1900’s- 10 percent of African Americans lived in the North Not as much segregation Most African Americans weren’t welcome in the really nice hotels and restaurants. Economic discrimination was a big battle.

7 NAACP African American group was organized to fight segregation. Main focus-school desegregation.

8 Civil Rights People have the right to be treated the same regardless of their race, gender, or religion.

9 Civil Rights Movement The civil rights movement -struggle to gain citizenship rights for African Americans.civil rights movement Challenged segregation. 1950’s- black leaders used marches, demonstrations, boycotts in a fight to end segregation and racist laws.

10 Martin Luther King Jr. Most important voice of the Civil Rights Movement. Used strategies that were nonviolent Felt that all men should be created equal Never got tired of trying to end segregation laws

11 Martin Luther King Jr. Nobel Peace Prize- youngest person to ever win(1964) Assassinated in Memphis, TN. at age 39
