Identify the contributions made by these historic figures: James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, and Mary Musgrove (founding of Georgia); Sequoyah (development of a Cherokee alphabet); Jackie Robinson (sports); Martin Luther King, Jr. (civil rights); Jimmy Carter (leadership and human rights). Essential Question: How does the work of Martin Luther King Jr. affect my life today?

3 Log in to MackinVIA Click on the link below to go to the Kincaid website http://www.cobbk12.org/kincaid/ On the left side of the page, click on “Student Resources” Then click on “Cobb Digital Library” To log in, type in the name of our school Kincaid Elementary Username: kincaid Passwork: read

4 Brain Pop Jr. When you are logged in to Mackinvia, use the scroll bar on the right side of the page and scroll down until you find Brain Pop Jr. Click on the red box that says “Open Now” When you are in Brain Pop Jr., click on “Social Studies” Next, click “Biographies” Finally, find “Martin Luther King Jr.” and click to watch the video Use the information you learn in the video to fill in the answers to questions 1 – 5 on your response handout

5 Pebble Go After you are done watching the Brain Pop Jr. video and answering the questions, look at the top of your screen and find the tab that says “MackinVIA”. Click on it to go back to the home screen. Click NEXT at the top right of the page to go to the next page of links Find the pink Pebble Go icon that says biographies Click on the red box that says “Open Now” On the home page, click on “African Americans” Then, click on “Civil Rights Leaders” Finally, click on “Martin Luther King Jr.”

6 Pebble Go First, click on the tab that says “Education” and answer question number 6 on your response handout. Second, click on the tab that says “Life’s Work” and answer question number 7 on your response handout. Next, click on the tab that says “Contributions” and answer question 8. Click on the tab that says “Timeline” and answer question 9. Click on the tab that says “Video” and watch to answer question 10 on your response handout.

At the end of the page, click on the link that says, “Next Page, His Life Cut Short” and read the information to answer questions 13 and 14.

8 Contributions To answer question 15, think over all that you have learned so far about Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and write down why you believe it is so important that we remember his life today. Think about all of the things he accomplished and the way that he accomplished those things when you are coming up with your answer.
