Peacekeeping in Yugoslavia By: Dalen Lorenz

The Cause of Conflict   Yugoslavia was split up into many different ethnic groups. In 1992, hatred between the different ethnic groups eventually led to a civil war outbreak. The war mainly consisted of a three-way battle between the major powers (Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia).

UNPROFOR to the rescue! In 1992 the UN deployed the united nations protection force (UNPROFOR) when they heard the conflict taking place in Yugoslavia. UNPROFOR consisted of roughly 40,000 soldiers from many different countries attempting to bring peace to the warring country. Soldiers were situated at the borders between the conflicting countries in attempt to uphold a cease-fire between them. During the Bosnian war, Canadian Major General Lewis MacKenzie opened the airport at Sarajevo to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid. Due to his efforts in Bosnia, Lewis MacKenzie became one of the greatest Canadian heroe's of Yugoslavia

The Resolution By 1995, the UN had stopped the civil war in Yugoslavia. Canada and other countries withdrew their forces from UNPROFOR. Although the civil war is over, there are still a few forces left in Bosnia to watch over the armed conflict. Yugoslavia flag as a peace symbol.
