Today's Agenda: Research on engaging students with SMART Board. Different ideas for SMART Board during instruction. Tutorials on different SMART Notebook 11 techniques. Resources

A t their best, interactive whiteboards/ SMARTboards can get students out of their seats to lead their own learning. But, like all technology, the boards are only as good as the people using them. This training should give you some ideas of what to do with them. The more you use them the more you will rely on this tool.

“Focus group, survey and observational data revealed that students were generally more engaged in learning activities when SMART Board technologies were incorporated into instructional activities.” U niversity of New Brunswick Health and Education Research Group (2008) A pplying SMART Board Technology in Elementary School Classrooms: Investigation of a School-Wide Initiative A year-long study by researchers at the University of New Brunswick shows that combining relevant professional development with the use of SMART Board™ interactive whiteboards improves the education experience for both teachers and students during a school-wide SMART product implementation. SMART Board Research

Uses for the SMART Board. 1. Projection of videos, powerpoints, documents and images. This use of the SMARTboard is a way to get comfortable with equipment without much effort. It acts the same as a projector and screen. You can start using the controls start, pause, stop buttons on the big screen to get more comfortable with the touch of the board.

2. Scan or copy documents into SMART Notebook program. Open digital document. Click File, Print. When the window opens, click on pull down menu for Printer. Choose SMART Notebook Document Writer. This will open up a SMART document. You can edit the document. Save the document.

3. Use the scanned documents/files to model activities. S ome examples: Morning work - Daily Edits, Math Spiral Review, Geography Workbooks are copied into the Notebook software. Each morning the files are brought up on the SMARTboard and the students correct their work. It is used as a teaching tool at this time. Either the teacher will facilitate these or students can lead this activity. I use it both ways. Daily Oral Language Practice - Week 1 1i had gave him to quarters sally doesnt want to read anns book 2 yesterday kim and me taked the ball home i have learn that were next 3in august he didnt never do good barry gots a new game that we can use 4we saw them people while walking in shorewood park he has teached school worked in a factory and drived a bus 5 there is people who doesnt like halloween i havent no short story called snowbound

4. Create your own lessons using SMART Notebook Software. I n my opinion, math lessons are the easiest to begin creating. Once created save the document and use it over and over again, year after year. These lessons also allow for ease of instruction when a student is missing from the lesson. Print copies of examples done during class to send home for the student who is absent. Here are two examples that were made simply by using text, clipart and the infinite cloner tool. organized list with clothes combinations.notebook Strega Nona direct quotation punctuation.notebook

A great resource that includes podcasts with step by step directions. Activitiy Builder Tutorial - teaches you to create activities and themes in lessons. The men, Dave and Scott in this tutorial are a little corny but their message is explained well. They offer many different episodes to explain portions of the Smart Notebook software.
