2 Getting Started with Discovery Streaming

5 Setting Up Accounts This is the form you will see when you have entered your school Passcode. The key field in this form is the “Username” field since your log-in name must be unique to the entire DiscoveryStreaming subscriber base. Before you click the “Continue” button at the bottom, be sure that you are familiar with the Terms of Use and click the box that signifies that you agree to the subscription terms.

6 Log In Screen Enter the username and password that you have created. Note that you can be reminded of your username or password in the future if necessary.

8 Video Search Results The video search results page includes thumbnail views of the video and descriptions of the overall contents of the video. Mouse over the image to see the description. You can also view information about the target audience and copyright date and click links to view related content, curriculum standards, and a list of video segments.

9 Video Segment View The “Video Segments” tab displays the contents of the selected video divided into short segments that can be streamed or downloaded for use with presentations, classroom projects, and student activities. Click on the “segment image” or the “download” icons to stream or save video segments. Check the “Select to Add” boxes if you wish to include the segments in assignments, quizzes, or Playlists in your “My Content” materials.

10 Citations Since all of the digital media on the DiscoveryStreaming site is protected by copyright, it is important to include the proper citations for the videos, images, and articles you download from the site. The “Citations” tab displays the essential information in three accepted formats. Just copy the data from this page and paste it into your presentation and lesson files.

11 Tutorial Videos Login to Discovery Streaming and view this video: A Discovery Streaming Beginning A Discovery Streaming Beginning - This is a tutorial clip showing how to find a video clip using a "Narrow the Search" technique and how to save it to the computer. It includes how to logon and the basics for searching and saving a segment. See the Teacher Induction page for DiscoveryStreaming to find a user guide and more videos.

12 Saving to My Content Check the segment that you want to save and click the ADD button. Open the available folders. Save the segment in the My Content folder or add a new folder for the content area of the video. Click ADD.

13 Accessing My Content 1.Click on the My Content tab. 2.Open the folders until you get to where your video is saved. 3.Click on the title to open and play the video.

14 Teacher Center The Teacher Center contains a variety of instructional resources and special tools that you can use to create online assignments and activities.

15 My Builder Tools - Assignment Builder With the Assignment Builder, you can create online activities that feature videos, images, encyclopedia articles, and calendar events that you select from the DiscoveryStreaming libraries. Students visit the Student Center to access these materials.

16 My Builder Tools - Quiz Builder With the Quiz Builder, you can modify existing quizzes or create your own online assessments using digital resources from the DiscoveryStreaming libraries. As with projects created with the Assignment Builder, students visit the Student Center to access these materials.

17 My Builder Tools - Writing Prompt Builder The Writing Prompt Builder provides a tool to let you create your own writing activities using digital images from the DiscoveryStreaming library. You can use the completed prompts directly from the site or give students access through the Student Center.

18 Technology Information What types of software do I need to get started on DiscoveryStreaming? Internet Explorer is the recommended browser. You will also need: PCs: Windows Media Player (version 9 or later) Macs: QuickTime Player (version 6 or better) Macromedia Flash Plug-In Adobe Reader
