The Eatwell Plate In order to keep healthy it is important to eat a balanced diet. The Eatwell Plate can help us understand how much we should eat of different types of food.

Nutrients A balanced diet is made up of seven key NUTRIENTS. These nutrients are: Carbohydrates Proteins Fats Vitamins Minerals Fibre Water

Nutrients Each of the different nutrients provides us with something different.

Nutrients Carbohydrates provide us with energy.

Nutrients We need proteins for growth and repair.

Nutrients Fat can be used to store and provide energy. It also helps us to keep warm when it is cold.

Nutrients Minerals are needed in small doses to help keep the body healthy.

Nutrients Vitamins are needed in small doses to help keep the body healthy.

Nutrients Fibre helps our body to process the food which we eat.

Nutrients Water provides the body with fluid which is used by all the cells.

Nutrients Foods from the starchy section of the Eatwell Plate contain lots of carbohydrates. However potatoes also contain protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals.

Nutrients Different parts of the potato contain different nutrients.

Nutrients A medium jacket potato (flesh & skin) contains 1/3 of your recommended daily amount of Vitamin C The potato contains important minerals like potassium and iron A medium jacket potato contains more fibre than two large pieces of medium sliced wholemeal bread The flesh contains a small amount of protein The flesh is a great source of starchy carbohydrates
