Production manager The production management team (consisting of a production manager and any number of assistants) is responsible for realizing the visions of the director and the producer or choreographer. This involves coordinating the operations of various production sub-disciplines (scenic, wardrobe, lighting, sound, projection, automation, video, p yrotechnics, stage management etc.) of the presentation. Production managers can also work in TV, manufacturing etc. Average salaries for production managers with a few years of experience range from £25,000 to £35,000. For more experienced needed roles, salaries are in the region of £40,000 to £60,000.

Sound Engineer A sound engineer works with the recording, manipulation, mixing and reproduction of sound. Most sound engineers creatively use technologies to make sound for music, film, radio, television, electronic products and computer games. sound engineering deals with the creative and practical aspects of sounds including speech and music, as well as the development of new audio technologies. The equipment they use typically are: Amplifiers Analog-to-digital converters Digital audio workstations (DAW) Digital-to-analog converters Dynamic range compression Loudspeakers Microphones Mixing consoles Music sequencers Amplifiers Signal processors Tape machines The typical salary of an sound engineer is 16'000 to 18'000, after ten years experience it may raise to 30'000 to 35'000

Sound technician Sound technicians are required to assemble, operate and maintain the technical equipment used to record, amplify, enhance, mix or reproduce sound. They identify the sound requirements for a given task or situation and perform the appropriate actions to produce this sound. Sound technicians of different types are required in a range of industries including film, broadcasting (radio or television), live performance (theatre, music, dance), advertising and audio recordings.

Sound designer Essentially, the theatre sound designer is responsible for everything the audience hears. Exactly what that entails can vary considerably, depending on the type of show, the performers in the show and the performance venue. In practice there is no single job description that encompasses everything that the sound designer does, as they will adapt what they do to the demands of a specific production. The Sound Designer has to be a master of many different disciplines and technologies, and to have exceptional teamwork and people skills.

Lighting engineer A lighting engineer designs and implements the lighting arrangements for live and pre-recorded media events such as concerts, television shows, movies and public events. A lighting engineer is crucial to any production. Lighting is key to setting ambiance, mood and style to any staged event. At the outset a lighting engineer will be directed in his work by the production director, who will explain what he wants from the lighting and it is the lighting engineer’s job to bring that vision to a reality. Working with stagehands, riggers and electricians, the lighting engineer sets up configurations of lights that are then remotely controlled via a control board. During the production the lighting engineer may sit at this board and set different lighting effects in action at pre- determined cues. Often, series and sequences of effects are configured with computer programming.

Lighting technician Lighting Engineer are involved with rigging stage and location sets and controlling, electric lights for art and entertainment venues (theater or live music venues) or in video, television, or film production. the under the control of lighting designer and master electrician. In TV, film or video the work for the Gaffer or Chief Lighting Technician they are directed by the cinematographer. some lighting engineers will also lay electrical cables, wire fixtures, install color effects or image patterns, focus the lights, and assist in creating effects or programming sequences. but most work as riggers and install portable, temporary, electrical based modular, distribution units and portable cables. Their typical salary tends to be upward of £25,275 but you may need to start on a lower salary in order to secure work and gain experience.

Lighting designer The lighting designer begins by reading the script to be produced noting the type of light it calls for in each scene. Designer and director share their ideas about how light could be used to enhance the production concept at their first meeting. Early meetings with the set designer are also important because the set and lighting designers must collaborate on how to achieve the desired “look” for the play. The plan for the set may influence the placement and direction of the necessary lighting instruments, so flagging any potential problems in this area as early as possible makes sense.

Stage manager Stage managers are the ones who have overall responsibility for stage management and the smooth execution of a production. Including organizing the production and coordinating communications between various people for example the director and backstage crew, or actors and production management. they usually work in theatre. the equipment they use: a communication device stage desk their typical salary is £16,000 to £17,000, with deputy stage managers earning slightly more. Regular stage managers usually start around £20,000.

Assistant stage managers Assistant stage managers are generally responsible, either alone or with the stage manager’s help, for setting up the rehearsal space prior to rehearsals and cleaning up the space afterward. Once the show is in production, this duty becomes preparing and cleaning the stage and backstage areas before and after technical rehearsals and shows.

deputy stage manager The roles for the deputy stage manager are as followed, preparing and keeping the prompt script or Book up to date, prompting, calling artists for rehearsals and costume fittings, passing on the director’s requirements to the stage manger designer, and all other creative and technical departments, liaising with lighting and sound designers before and during technical rehearsals.

PRODUCTION ARTS PLANNING – MY PRODUCTION ROLE During our Artisound production and preparation we have all been allocated (chosen our job roles) job roles. I have chosen to be the production manager along side with another student Sam Scott. this means that Sam and I will be in charge of of making sure that the Health and Safety team are keeping up with there work and risk and legal requirements and health and safety forms, we will be talking to Patrick who is the team leader of the health and safety team and he will inform us what has been done and what he is going to do. We will also be doing this with Alex who is the sound engineer, Jack who is the fire marshal and Amy and Sorrel who are the stage managers. I am now going to research a professional production manager in the industry today to gather information on what will be needed from me and what I need to do to ensure that the production side of this event is exquisite. I have decided to to research the professional production manager Paul Byrne.
