Presentation transcript:

Thrillers have been seen since the early 1900’s when a man called Alfred Hitchcock who was one of the first people to explore the thriller genre. He understood that a stand alone thriller movie such as Psycho (one of the most famous thrillers of all time) Must keep the audience in suspense the whole time with constant excitement and action. Some of the first movies that were a true thriller happened to be a mix of horror and thriller making the horror thriller genre of film, these films were designed to scare you as well as keep you in suspense and often carry on to be a trilogy or keep it so you don’t quite understand the ending. Other things you might see in a thriller movie are false accusations, conspiracy theories and paranoia. Often thrillers keep you “on the edge of your seat” right until the end as the build up to a massive climax, they are often exciting and have a number of beats and turning points however keep a key part of the story hidden until the very end. Thrillers often have a good looking male or female role, who doesn’t quite play by the rules however is the god person and always manages to get the job done in the end, a good example of this would be die hard as it has a good looking male role. Who is a police officer that doesn’t play by the rules but manages to get the job done in the end. Thrillers are all about timing and the complexity of the story, for instance if you were to let a key piece of information out too early it may ruin or distort the story to a point were the audience can guess at what might happen (this can kill suspense. In more modern times allot of thrillers have begun to turn back to the horror side of things, they generally have allot of gore and blood as well as violence. A good example of this would be the Final Destination movies that seem to concentrate mainly on violence blood and guts. There are many different sub genres of thriller like I mentioned before with the horror thriller for instance you might have a Conspiracy thriller, crime thriller, disaster thriller, erotic thriller, legal thriller, medical thriller, mystery thriller, political thriller, psychological thriller, rape and revenge films, religious thriller, supernatural thriller and techno thriller. All of these different types of thriller genre are explored by a number of great directors over the years for instance there is Alfred Hitchcock, Bryan Bertino, John Boorman, D.J. Caruso, James Foley and Gary fleder as well as many more. All of these people specialise in specific types of genre some even have a small part in every single movie they have done this is called cameo and is popular amongst allot of thriller genre directors. Alfred Hitcock does this but only tiny parts in his movies are actually him he might say a line, do very little it is mainly just so he is in the film.

During the later part of the 1900’s more and more TV shows were released such as 24, the thriller genre has started to target the mainstream TV channels because this is a popular place for people to watch TV and for the channels as well as the show gain money. Another reason why the companies have started to target TV channels is because not as many people go to the cinema any more as well as it being allot pricier to put something in the cinema especially multiplex, it is then also costly to distribute it widely film it and then put it in for production on dvd’s and Blu-ray. However when you distribute something on the TV it is often cheaper both to produce and edit it as well as then distributing it, and then you main gain popularity from a film produce and end up making a film at their expense.
