Simulations & Virtual Reality Boeing 747 Simulator Cockpit Interior Boeing 747 Simulator Exterior

By the end of this lesson you will be able to: 1. Explain what is meant by the term simulation. 2. Give 3 examples of simulations. 3. List 3 reasons why simulations are used. 4. Identify 2 problems with simulations. 5. Explain what is term virtual reality. 6. Name 2 pieces of specialist equipment required as input/output devices.

What is meant by simulation? Simulation is using computers to model something that happens in real life.

Why are simulations used? 1. save money, simulations of new products can be tested without the expense of really creating it. 2. save money, new products can be simulated to see what they would look like in real life. 3. training people without risk to anyone. 4. training people without risk to expensive equipment. Computer simulations are used to

Learn to fly an airplane Train without risking your health. Train without risking an expensive airplane.

Learn to drive Train without risking your/others health. Train without risking an expensive car.

Other Uses Of Simulations Include: 1. Traffic control – will a new setup reduce congestion? 2. Aircraft design – will a new airplane fly? 3. Medical Training – learn to operate without risking a patient. 4. Boat handling – learn to sail a boat and the rules of the sea. 5. Tax changes – how will a tax change affect tax revenues.

Problems with simulations Real life can’t be simulated. The simulated experience is only as good as the software. Report on Learning to drive using the BSM Simulator Unfortunately what it won't do is teach you anything about car control. The driving physics are barely comparable to real life. The there's no real feeling of connection to the road. There's also no feedback through the steering wheel. The sound effects are also absolutely terrible, meaning it's difficult to accurately time gear changes before the slightly irate old chap pipes up to tell you you're in the wrong one.

Virtual Reality Virtual reality is a computer generated world in which the user can interact. Specialist VR Equipment Headset Data gloves

1. Questions Before answering these questions take time to go over the slideshow again.
