Neshaminy’s Philosophy of Literacy “Neshaminy Schools are dedicated to developing a culture of literacy that transcends classroom walls. Literacy instruction should stimulate, teach and extend the communication and thinking skills that allow students to develop positive attitudes about reading and writing. Our ultimate goal is to have students become effective readers, writers, thinkers, communicators and life-long learners.”

Big Ideas Students will use comprehension strategies. Students will collaborate with peers. Students learn and use academic vocabulary. Students will write to process and extend learning.

Roles & Responsibilities During Reading Workshop Reading Workshop Components Teacher’s RolesStudents’ Roles Mini-Lesson -Connected each lesson to ongoing student work. -Teach a skill or strategy to help students as readers. -Model thinking processes. -Read a variety of texts aloud -Be an active listener. -Turn and talk, and stop to write thoughts down to hold on to or grow understanding. -Participate in conversations. Communication & Clinic is the best way to contact us during the day or night. We will respond within 24 hours Clinic: Tuesdays from 7:15-7:45. Your child can ask for a clinic pass from me!

Homework & Grading Reading Log- Your child should be reading for a minimum of five nights per week (20 minutes per night). He or she should record their reading on the log. Logs will be collected on Fridays and then he or she will receive a new log for the next week.
