BIRTH CONTROL

FACTS TO BE AWARE In the United States, the teenage pregnancy rate is higher than in many other countries. Approximately 750,000 teens become pregnant every year and most didn't plan on becoming pregnant. Every year, million Americans are infected with a new STD. Nearly 1 million Americans are infected with the AIDS virus -- and a third of these people don't even know it. The most effective way to prevent pregnancy and STDs is abstinence.

What is Birth Control? Birth control is any method used to prevent pregnancy. Another word for birth control is contraception.pregnancycontraception a good method of birth control you can use every time can help you avoid an unplanned pregnancy

History of Birth Control Birth control was illegal in 1900s. Before the Industrial Revolution, birth control devices in America relied largely on condoms for men condoms Abortion-inducing herbs such as savin and pennyroyal also were used The invention of rubber vulcanization in 1839 soon led to the beginnings of a U.S. contraceptive industry producing condoms When these devices were declared illegal, the flourishing trade simply began selling them as "hygiene" products To respect women traditional roles, birth control pill for women was introduced in 1960s.

Ways Of Birth Control Birth Control Patch – a thin, beige, 1¾-inch (4½-centimeter) square patch that sticks to the skin – releases hormones through the skin into the bloodstream to prevent pregnancy Birth Control Pill – daily pill that contains hormones to change the way the body works and prevent pregnancy – "combination pills" containing a combination of the hormones estrogen and progesterone to prevent ovulation – Most combination pills come in either a 21-day pack or a 28-day pack.

Ways Of Birth Control (Con.) Birth Control Ring – a soft, flexible, doughnut-shaped ring about 2 inches (5 centimeters) in diameter – inserted into the vagina, where it slowly releases hormones Birth Control Shot – a long-acting form of progesterone, a hormone that is naturally manufactured in a girl's ovaries – given as an injection in the upper arm or in the buttocks once every 3 months

Ways Of Birth Control (Con.) Condom – A barrier method of contraception – There are male condoms and female condoms – A male condom is a thin sheath (usually made of latex, a type of rubber) that is worn on the penis – A female condom is a polyurethane sheath with a flexible ring at either end – Keeping semen (the fluid that contains sperm) from entering the vagina

Ways Of Birth Control (Con.) Emergency contraception – prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex – called the morning-after pill – hormone pills that women can take after having sex. – levonorgestrel works up to 72 hours after having unprotected sex Implantable contraception – a small, flexible plastic tube containing hormones that doctors insert just under the skin of the upper arm – a matchstick-sized flexible tube that can be left in place and protects against pregnancy for up to 3 years – The implanted tube slowly releases low levels of the hormone progestin to prevent pregnancy
