Leonardo DaVinci By Joseph Ordillas  Born April 15, 1452 in Vinci, Italy  Died on May 5, 1519  The name, DaVinci, simply means from Vinci

Leonardo DaVinci was a famous Renaissance man. He was a sculptor, architect, inventor, engineer, town planner and mapmaker, as well as an expert painter.  He painted the Mona Lisa, one of his most famous paintings  Trained to be a painter  He studied anatomy, astronomy, botany, geology, geometry and optics

The Duke and the Duchess  In 1482, he became the court artist for the duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza  Later in 1499, when he visited Mantua, a city in Italy. There, he made a famous drawing for the Duchess of Mantua, Isabella d’Este.

The Last Supper  During Leonardo’s years in Milan, he created a famous wall painting called The Last Supper.  The Last Supper is the event in which Jesus ate with his friends one last time before being betrayed by one of his own, Judas.

Scientific Studies  DaVinci used drawings for 2 things: a tool for scientific investigation and an expression of artistic imagination. He was interested in the science of motion and force also known as mechanics. He drew plans for aircraft like a helicopter and a parachute. When studying anatomy, Leonardo dissected human corpses and the bodies of animals.

Paintings  In the early 1500’s, Leonardo made 2 paintings: Mona Lisa and The Virgin and Child With Saint Anne. Some of his paintings were religious, like John the Baptist, Saint, The Last Supper, and Jesus Christ.  Some of Leonardo’s paintings are considered to be the first accurate portrayals of the human anatomy.  Leonardo was interested in optics, which is considered with the properties of light. He carefully analyzed such things as the pattern of light and shadow on a sphere before a window.
