3 I. Medieval Art Giotto: Madonna and Child (ca 1300) How would you describe this painting in terms of the subject matter, appearance of the mother and child, the background, the painter’s use of color, and imagery.

4 I. Medieval Art A.Characteristics: - Emphasis on religious images - Flat (lacked depth, background) - Dull Colors - Unrealistic - Disproportionate (religious figures depicted the largest) - Rigid, with no appearance of movement

5 II. Renaissance Art Botticelli: Birth of Venus (1486) How is this painting different from Giotto’s in terms of subject matter, background, color and imagery?
