Possible DO NOW Answers – More people were settling in urban centers compared to settling in rural settings because the number of immigrants coming to America was skyrocketing. Most immigrants did not venture very farm from the city in which they had arrived. – Answer: D I think that most people passed through New York City because most immigrants who were coming from North and Central Europe, were traveling across the Atlantic Ocean. One of the first major cities that immigrants from Europe could reach was New York City. NYC was also the home of Ellis Island which is where most immigrants were processed as they moved into America.

Possible DO NOW Answer The only types of jobs offered to many immigrants at this time period were “pick and shovel” jobs. These jobs were most likely associated with manual labor. Not fair. The “padrone” said he would help get Panunzio and his friend a job if they paid him 50 cents a week. A “shantee” was probably a word or phrase that referred to a very crowded, unsanitary place that workers used as a place to live. The shanty is described as having open bunks that were filled with straw for workers to sleep on.

The cartoon shows Uncle Same extending his arms to immigrants and the sign above him (“U.S. Arc of Refuge”) expresses an idea that people can seek refuge or settlement in America. B. Listed on the sign, immigrants will not have to worry about the following: No oppressive taxes No expensive kings No military service No knouts or dugeons C. Free education, land, speech, ballots, lunch D. Many Americans might be offended by the idea that people from all over the world can simply enter their country and immediately receive all these rights/privledges, without having to do much to earn them. Americans may also be concerned with jobs being taken away from citizens and given to new immigrants.
