The Beaford Academy…. beafordarts

Summer 2011 Focus: Working as an artist in residence for 4 days, 3 nights, having submitted an individual or collaborative proposal of work to Beaford Arts. using the skills learnt at TBA to date & the working practices modelled by Michael Brennand-Wood. Peer crits, presentations, evaluations & one-to-one support from subject specialist tutors facilitated their vision, skills, techniques & their working practice. Sculptural, mixed media, painterly & site specific art work lead to a group exhibition celebrating their achievements. Artists: TBA members, working independently & as a collaboration,

May 2011 Focus: Texture, surface qualities & rendering 3D using two & three dimensions. Specialism's: paint, talc-tex, glaze & oxide Artists: Michael Brennand-Wood, Sara Dudman & Caroline Preston

Parent feedback: greater self-discipline increased organisational skills enriched knowledge improved critical analysis enhanced self evaluation across all facets of school work greater understanding of artistic techniques and skills an ignited passion and desire to learn outside of school more confident developed greater social skills and made new friends much more willing to accept praise confidence in Option choices a palpable sense of excitement! “It is not just about her developing new skills but also about her developing her identity and forming associations with new ideas and people that she would not normally be exposed to… it’s much more linked to her lifestyle and attitudes and that it is fundamental to "who she is and the way she sees things" “The Beaford Academy concept; the residential element, the sense of continuous engagement, the challenging but measured content, the sensible timetabling and the outstanding quality of teaching have been essential ingredients in that success.”

January 2011 From 2D shape to 3D Form Inside & outside concepts of self & organic form Artists: Michael Brennand-Wood and Gill Bliss

November D: positive/ negative form, inside/ outside Artist: Michael Brennand-Wood

Artist feedback: ‘Over a weekend a great deal of work is produced, of equal importance, perhaps not so immediately visible, is the seismic shifts in thinking and confidence. To be surrounded by a group of like minded people, committed to creativity is a hugely empowering experience…’ Michael Brennand-Wood, Textile Artist, Patron of TBA ‘This group of students were the most inventive and committed that I have encountered as an artist and in my many years of teaching! They were happy to work into the evening and had such receptive engagement with concentration and the absorption on information.’ Jane Price, Devon Guild of Craftsmen and tutor at Exeter College

During and after the transformation!

August 2010 Wearable Art: transition from 2D into 3D, showcase and application of skills learnt throughout + Teignmouth TRAIL Artist: Jane Price

Teacher feedback: ‘The students in TBA at our school have bonded over this mutual experience, we have encouraged them to bring in and show their work to their peers and teachers in the department to talk about the variety of skills and new materials able to use at Beaford. The children have been really impressed and this really spurs them all on to do well. Their sketchbook skills are now outstanding and it has given them confidence to develop further in an accelerated specialist school group.’ – Niamh Carew, G&T Co-ordinator, Ivybridge Community College, Devon ‘We have photographed and recorded the work they have done at TBA for the school, putting it into the bulletin, and the department have stolen the ideas and techniques (!) – utilising them for work and projects with the other students across year groups’ – Zoe North, HOD, Colyton Grammar, Devon

‘As a result of attending TBA I have more confidence when I apply media and so can take more risks.’ Yr9 Student, Devon ‘I have challenged myself to manage my own time & schedule, making more independent decisions about what I am going to do as a result of TBA this year. Yr10, Somerset ‘Over TBA I have become a lot more confident in the unknown, using materials I wouldn’t normally work with in dimensions I wouldn’t normally work in’ Yr10 Student, Somerset ‘Working with Michael Brennand-Wood has given me a better sense of professionalism that has helped me consider displaying my work & approaching it from different angles.’ Yr10 Student, Bristol ‘Before TBA I would avoid Sculpture. I didn’t enjoy it & didn’t have any enthusiasm to try. After TBA, I now feel confident & happy towards sculpting, especially after creating my own 3D proposal & outcome.’ Yr10 Somerset ‘Throughout TBA I was encouraged to think about my work through every stage of making it & producing my final outcome so it allowed for a lot of development through the stages. I now know I can be more free & expressive with my work & continue a lot of techniques / styles to produce a final piece.’ Yr9 Student, Devon ‘I have used nearly all the skills we learnt at TBA in school, I’m more confident with different styles now, and I feel more free than I did before…most of my work is inspired by TBA, I try to experiment more, each one gets better and better! A lot of my friends are arty and I show them a lot of my work.’ Yr8 Student, Somerset TBA feedback:

The future: ‘It has inspired & enhanced her self aspiration & experimentation. There is no comparison between her art work now, & then (pre TBA) e.g. she achieved A* grade for her sketchbook at school.’ ‘She now has ambitions to run an art gallery & is even talking of business studies after school to further this, plus painting herself.’ ‘She has worked towards a bronze award which included helping run an arts class at her school in which she taught techniques she herself had learnt at TBA. I don’t think she would have had the confidence to do this prior to TBA.’ ‘Her knowledge of art techniques and her overall interest in anything related to art has increased drastically…she has set up a ‘company’ called TLC productions making artistic bunting which they’re selling at car boot sales!’ Will you join us for another exciting year???
