Presentation transcript:

National Junior Honor Society National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are more than just an honor roll. The Honor Society chapter establishes rules for membership that are based upon a student's outstanding performance in the areas of: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character (plus citizenship for NJHS). These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built.

Scholarship: Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 85 percent, B, 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent standard of excellence, or a higher cumulative average set by the local school's Faculty Council, meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character (and citizenship for NJHS).

Service: This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.

Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.

Character: The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle.

Citizenship: The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic involvement, has a high regard for freedom, justice, and democracy, and demonstrates mature participation and responsibility through involvement with such activities as scouting, community organizations, and school clubs.

BSMS Qualification: You will be expected to maintain an average grade of 90% or higher with no grades below an 85% in any class (report cards to be handed in quarterly). You will need to maintain good attendance throughout the school year. You will need to continue to have outstanding behavior (level 1 will be reviewed, no level 2 or higher).

BSMS Qualification: You will need to earn 25 hours of volunteer time with or without the school completed within the school year (August 25, 2011-May 15, 2012). You will need to preserve a reputation of respect, good character, and motivation. Acceptance is contingent upon review of your final report card grades.

High Standards: You are a member, not your parents You are the best of the best, expected to act that way Grades, discipline, and NJHS values are very important Participation is required, dismissal will happen, if rules and standards are not followed

Why should you be involved: Helps give you the volunteer hours you will need to apply for college Looks Very good on college applications NJHS will get you into NHS in high school Fun with other members, plan 8th grade dance and 8th grade T-shirt, Relay for Life, field trip to college, picnic, and Dodge ball!
