1 Welcome to the C.T. Koontz Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society!

2 Established in 1929 to create an organization that would recognize and encourage academic achievement while also developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. Extremely prestigious organization with a reputation for excellence. Membership is both an honor and a commitment.

3 Our Purpose To create enthusiasm for scholarship
To stimulate a desire to render service To promote worthy leadership To encourage the development of character in students of Koontz

4 Membership Must be 2nd semester 6th graders and have been in attendance for one semester at Koontz. Must have a minimum GPA of 86 or B for 1st semester and for the 3rd 9 weeks. After meeting these 2 requirements, students will be considered based on service, leadership, character and citizenship. *****Candidates become members when inducted at a special ceremony in the spring!*****

5 Service 12 hours total The student who serves:
volunteers and provides dependable and well-organized assistance and is willing to make sacrifices to offer assistance works well with others enthusiastically renders any requested service to the school is willing to represent the class or school in interclass and interscholastic competition does committee work without complaint participates in some activity outside of school (Girl or Boy Scouts, religious groups, etc.) mentors in the community or other students shows courtesy at all times

6 Leadership The student who leads:
Demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities Exercises positive influence on peers Contributes ideas that improve the civic life of school Is able to delegate responsibilities Inspires positive behavior in others Demonstrates academic initiative Successfully holds school offices or positions of responsibility Is a leader in the classroom Is dependable in any responsibility accepted

7 Character The student with character will demonstrate, at all times:
Trustworthiness Respect Responsibility Fairness Caring Citizenship

8 Citizenship The student who demonstrates citizenship:
understands the importance of civic engagement has a high regard for freedom and justice; respects the US form of government, representative democracy and respects the law for all citizens demonstrates mature participation and responsibility through involvement with outside of school activities

9 Meetings Twice a month (additional meetings called if needed)
All members expected to attend (two or more unexcused absences will be reviewed to determine if action should be taken)

10 Service One group service project will be planned which all members must attend Each member will choose and participate in individual service projects which reflect his or her particular talents and interests to equal 12 hours (must be approved)

11 Student Officers Will be elected at the last meeting of the school year President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Historian All active members are eligible to vote Majority vote

12 Dismissal from National Junior Honor Society
Reasons for dismissal include: GPA falling below B average (written warning and a time period for improvement will be given) Violations of school regulations (discipline referrals or out of school suspensions) Use of profanity, failure to comply, excessive unexcused absences or tardiness (written warning will be given along with a conference if needed) *****If dismissed or resigned, student is no longer a member and may never again be considered*****

14 National Junior Honor Society Pledge
I pledge myself to uphold the high purposes of the National Junior Honor Society to which I have been selected; I will be true to the principles for which it stands; I will be loyal to my school and will maintain and encourage high standards of scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship.
