+ The Issue… How can faculty and administrators engage students in the classroom, attract prospective students, and compete on a global level with other institutions through social media while keeping students and the campus community safe and teaching them how to make wise decisions when creating their online branding profile?

+ Facebook Statistics One in every nine people on Earth is on Facebook ( This number is calculated by dividing the planets 6.94 billion people by Facebook’s 750 million users) People spend 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook Each Facebook user spends on average 15 hours and 33 minutes a month on the site More than 250 million people access Facebook through their mobile devices More than 2.5 million websites have integrated with Facebook 30 billion pieces of content is shared on Facebook each month 300,000 users helped translate Facebook into 70 languages People on Facebook install 20 million “Apps” every day

+ University of Southern Florida Plans on doing a Foursquare Scavenger Hunt for Homecoming so students can check-in at the different events and earn prizes Created one location that houses a directory of every official USF-affiliated Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and blog site Mass Communication Professor required students to create their own twitter accounts so they can interact with their peers outside of the classroom. The professor also hosted study reviews and answered class questions all via Twitter.

+ Syracuse University Hosted a three day acapella and social media conference in 2011 Each individual workshop had a unique Twitter hashtag so members not in attendance, along with the audience, could comment and ask questions during the event. The use of Twitter was so popular that the conference coordinators are keeping the group together by continuing to tweet about news and future events.

+ Social Media Pillars of Responsibility T hink before you click You cannot delete or retract many of the interactions you have online Make posts u nderstandable Do not use slang, too many acronyms, or anything else that would make your posts hard to understand R espect everyone You never know who is reading your posts N etwork outside of your circle Join conversations and build relationships with others Create an i dentity - use a recognizable name Allow people to find you online. Use privacy settings to your advantage, but do not completely block yourself Be t ruthful in online communication Be honest - do not spread gossip or stories that may be false or hurtful Your reputation is u niversal Online communication is an extension of you as a person Receive p ermission before posting anything online Ask people before posting photos or tagging them in text TURN IT UP

+ Connecting to the internet at Middle College? When students connect to the internet for the first time, they will be asked to read the Social Media Pillars of Responsibility and complete an activity that follows The activity is designed to keep students engaged and actively recall information they just covered concerning responsible social media usage After completing the activity the first time, the student will be exempt from the activities until they change their password after 90 days. At that time, they will need to complete the activity again. If students successfully complete the activity, they will be granted internet access. If they fail to completely the activity accurately, they will be redirected back to the Pillars and asked to try again until they are successful.
