Tampere is the third biggest city in Finland with 210 thousands citizens, and most populous inland city in any of the Nordic countries. It`s located on south of Finland between two lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi and was founded in 1775 by Gustav III of Sweden. There are many woods, lakes and swamps around Tampere. Location of Tampere in Finland Coat-of-arms of Tampere The region of Tampere is called Pirkanmaa and includes around residents. There`s relatively cold, because even in summer temperature isn`s higher than 22 centigrades.

A tree-lined walking path beside Lake Tampere Lakes Näsijärvi (256 km² in size) and Pyhäjärvi ( km² in size) are linked by river Tammeroski, and they differ in level by 18 metres. Tammeroski is around two kilometres long and it flows through the city centre. Due to level difference between the lakes it has been important power source through history, recently for generating electricity. During the latter half of 19th century Tampere had almost half of Finland's industrial labour. It gave Tampere nickname “Manchester of the North”. Industry of the region is focused on mechanical engineering and automation, information and communication technologies, and health and biotechnology, as well as pulp and paper industry education.

Cathedral of Tampere City Centre with river Tammeroski Cathedral of Tampere was designed by Lars Sonck and built between 1902 and The cathedral is famous for its frescoes, painted by renowned symbolist Hugo Simberg between 1905 and City is also known for its Tampere Film Festival, an international short film festival, is held every March and Tammerfest - Tampere's urban rock festival held every July.

In summer there are bright nights because city isn`t far from polar circle, so days are separated only by few hours of twilight, but in winter days are short and the night already begins in the afternoon. There are also many interesting things in centre of Tampere, like this steam locomotive near to the railway station or Näsinnuela tower (168m). There is an indoor terrace in height of 120 metres. It`s the tallest observation tower in Nordic region. A preserved VR Class Hv1 steam locomotive (no. 575) Näsinnuela tower

Näsijärvi originated after retire of iceberg 9000 years ago. There is a small, rocky island upon which a lighthouse resides - it is the most popular walking destination on the lake. Apart from that it is the biggest lake in Tampere region and in months February and March it is entirely frozen. View on lake Näsijärvi. Maximal depth of water is about metres, it contains together 598 little islands and maximal lenght of Näsijärvi is 40 kilometres. Näsijärvi at winter

Lake Pyhäjärvi is shapped like letter “C” and its borders are extend even to city Nokia. Water here is warmer then in Näsijärvi, because water here flows through the Tammeroski rapids, but there`s too island. It`s called Viikinsaari (Viking Island) where`s old church with pagan symbols inside, and on island is also the dance hall. Pyhäjärvi Viikinsaari Island Name of the lake today means „Holly Lake“ but originally in older Finnish it probably meant „Border Lake“. At winter the ice is close to 50cm.

Pyynikki has been part of the city since its foundation in 1779 and one of locations here is Pispala. It`s the old works quarter from older industry periods. Wooden houses there was built by families themselves. Until the late 19th century were buildings in Tampere built from wood and fire was serious danger. Because of this were trained special night guards who watched over the city at night. Pispala There are hilly terrain, so there are also many wooden stairs. Next curiosity in Pispala is Rajaportin sauna - oldest public sauna in Finland that is still in use and was started in Authentic wooden stairs

Pyynikki tower (Pyynikin näkötorni) in 1932 Another interesting place is Pyynikki ridge. There`s old observation tower in the middle of Pyynikki park. It`s 26 metres tall and in these times there`s cafeteria. It was built in 1929 of red granit in the architectural style of Classicism of the 1920s, on the top of Pyynikki Ridge. It replaced an earlier wooden tower which was built in 1888 and was damaged by war in 1918.This tower offers wide view on Tampere and both lakes around. …and today

Pyynikki Ridge The Pyynikki ridge is not far from Pispala. Ridge was formed about years ago, during last ice period. There are too ancient shores left by ancient seas and lakes. Another interesting thing in Pyynikki is Pyynikki beach, but water there`s warm enough for swimming only in summer. Pyynikki beach Pyynikki Ridge is situated between the lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi, about two kilometres from city centre and it`s frequented turistic destination.
