3 Stonehenge  In England it is one of the most important prehistoric sites in the world. It has always been the subject for debates because it was built by a culture that left no written records. Numerous scientists say it was used for religious ceremonies.

4 Big Ben The old Big Ben Clock Tower has been the most recognized London’s attraction for 150 years already. It is the third largest  free-standing clock tower in the world and the main symbol of England. Its name refers actually not to the tower itself but to the bell within the tower. It is named after Sir Benjamin Hall – the person who ordered the bell.

5 Buckingham Palace The Palace is surrounded by the garden and is the official London residence of English royalty. Its east side was added in 1847 and entirely replaced in 1913 while the west facade of the palace building remains the same as Nash designed it. You may visit the Music Room, the Throne Room and the State Dining Room.

6 Warwick Castle It is one of the top attractions in England thanks to its beauty and historical significance. It was built by William the Conqueror in 1068 and it was originally a wooden structure. It was restored in 12th century and was rebuilt in stone. In the times of the Hundred Years War it became on the best examples of military architecture .

7 Durham Cathedral In the BBC poll held in 2001 this church was voted as England’s most-loved building. It is located in the northeast of England in the city of Durham and is the greatest Norman building in England. It was founded in 1093 and even after the reconstructions its biggest part remains true to the Norman design.

8 Tower of London  It was founded in 1055 and served as a royal residence. Later in 1100 it became a prison till the mid twentieth century. There have been numerous tales of ghosts, including Anne Boleyn which used to live there and it is believed to be the most haunted building in the country.

9 Lake District This  is a mountainous region in North West of the country. It is the largest National Park in England and is the top destination for hiking and climbing. The main attractions are the hills, lakes and mountains. Thanks to its picturesque scenery it is visited by around 14 million visitors each year. 

10 Windsor Castle It is one of the official residences of Queen Elizabeth II. She uses it for entertaining and spends many weekends here throughout the year. The castle is called the oldest and the largest inhabited castle in the world. The State Apartments are open for visitors.

11 Liverpool Many of Liverpool’s historical buildings are included in UNESCO World Heritage Sites List. For the best view of the city climb up the Anglican Cathedral, explore the Tudors Speke Hall and St George’s Hall. It is more internationally known for giving the world such a great music band as the Beatles.

12 York Minster dominates the skyline of York and is the biggest Gothic Cathedral in the country. The construction of the York Minster was started in and was finished in more than 200 years. The cathedral is also famous for its “Great East Window’’.
