Broadwater School History Department Controlled Assessment: CA5 Vietnam How to answer your Enquiry The extent of the success of the military tactics used by the South Vietnamese Government and the USA Defining terms: what does the question mean? Before answering the question you must decide what tit is actually asking you to write about. In this case you need to judge: the extent: which means how successful or not the tactics were. the military tactics: which means the methods used to fight the VC. Specifically concentrating on the South Vietnamese Government and the USA. It is essential to decide what constituted success: how would the Government of South Vietnam and the USA have judged success or failure? For this reason, the success, or otherwise of the military tactics has to be judged against the aims of the South Vietnamese Government and the USA.

Broadwater School History Department Controlled Assessment: CA5 Vietnam How to answer your Enquiry The extent of the success of the military tactics used by the South Vietnamese Government and the USA Collecting evidence of the tactics used: finding and recording facts. the military tactics: collect information the methods used to fight the VC. This can be done either chronologically or by type of tactic. By dealing with it chronologically it will be easier to show how a new tactic was developed in response to the success or failure of its predecessor. the extent: judge how successful or not the tactics were, by comparing the tactics with the objectives of the South Vietnamese Government and the USA. Make this judgement against each tactic you write about, both describing the tactic and judging it against what it set out to achieve.

Broadwater School History Department Controlled Assessment: CA5 Vietnam How to answer your Enquiry The extent of the success of the military tactics used by the South Vietnamese Government and the USA Planning the enquiry: how best to organise and present your ideas the military tactics: make a simple chart that lists tactic, success / failure This can be done either chronologically or by type of tactic. By dealing with it chronologically it will be easier to show how a new tactic was developed in response to the success or failure of its predecessor. the extent: make an overall judgement and summarise your conclusions into a short paragraph that: Uses the wording of the question (to provide focus) Includes an overall judgement about the success or failure of the tactics (remember there is no “correct” answer, it could be success, failure or a combination of both, depending upon which tactic is being judged). Introduces the main tactics employed by the Government of South Vietnam and the USA and how they are to be judged. There should be one paragraph for each tactic. Plan the order and content of the paragraphs that you will include. This must be the same as the list in your introduction. Plan the content of each paragraph: it should include information about the tactic, what its aims were and a judgement about its success or failure. Plan a conclusion that restates the ideas from your introduction.

Broadwater School History Department Controlled Assessment: CA5 Vietnam How to answer your Enquiry The extent of the success of the military tactics used by the South Vietnamese Government and the USA Using the Planning Sheets You can take up to two sides of A4 as notes to help you write up your enquiry. There should be notes on the military aims of the Government of South Vietnam and the USA. There should be notes on the military tactics employed by each one. The can be done either chronologically or by type of tactic. By dealing with the tactics chronologically it will be easier to show how a new tactic was developed in response to the success or failure of its predecessor. Plan the content of each paragraph: it should include information about the tactic, what its aims were and a judgement about its success or failure. Collect brief quotations from your sources to support your judgements. Plan a conclusion that restates the ideas from your introduction.
