VOCABULARY ITEMS

Guillotine (n.)  Definition: a device with a long sharp blade which is used for cutting materials  E.g.: Guillotine applies a lot pressure on materials to cut them. (shear force) CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Guilllotining (n.)  Definition: The act of cutting materials with a guillotine  E.g.: Guillotining is one of the ways of cutting and shaping materials. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Punching (n.)  Definition:  Definition: The act of making holes on materials with a punch (machine)  E.g.:  E.g.: Ventilation in small spaces is provided by punching holes on the metal or whatever the material covering the area. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Punch (n.)  Definition: a punching machine that makes holes, small shapes, such as circles on metals, or other hard materials  E.g.: These holes on this cupboard were made with a punch. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Shear (v.)  Definition: to cut something by applying a scissoring force  E.g.: It is be hard to shear materials with unsharpened blades, hence the blades should be sharpened regularly after each use to maintain them for a long time and for better cutting results. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT Shear with scissors

Shear force  Definition:  Definition: The physical force applied on the cut material (from up and down, or from right and left at the same time) CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT SHEAR FORCE

Die (n.)  Definition:  Definition: a component of a punch having a particular shape (circular, square, erctangular, heart-shaped etc.) that makes the holes on the workpiece through being pushed against it CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Blank (v.)  Definition:  Definition: the shaped piece of metal that is punched from the sheet   E.g.: Coins are an example of blank metals. They are punched out of metal sheets (or plates) in a particular shape, and then the necessary information such as year, value, and a pattern is printed on them. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Blanking (n.)  Definition: If the blank, like a coin, is the demanded or the finished product, this process is called blanking  E.g.: Coins are produced through a blanking process. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Piercing (n.)  Definition: If the pierced sheet with the holes on it is the demanded or the finished product, this process is called piercing.  E.g.: You can water your flowers more effectively by piercing the pots from bottom to let excessive water go through the holes. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Flame cutting  Definition:  Definition: (metallurgy) Use of an oxyacetylene, oxyhydrogen, or oxycoal gas flame to cut thick metals.  E.g.:  E.g.: Flame-cutting can be dangerous if not carefully and correctly done as the gases used in this process are highly flammable. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) or Spark Erosion CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

torch (n.)  Definition:  Definition: a fire source, usually a rod- shaped piece of wood with a rag soaked in pitch and/or some other flammable material wrapped around one end CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Oxyacetylene (n.)  Definition: a mixture of oxygen and acetylene gases  E.g.: an oxyacetylene torch CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

plasma (n.)   Definition: the fourth state of matter. Many places teach that there are three states of matter; solid, liquid and gas, but there are actually four; the fouth is plasma.   E.g.: To put it very simply, a plasma is an ionized gas, a gas into which sufficient energy is provided to free electrons from atoms or molecules and to allow both species, ions and electrons, to coexist. electrons CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Plasma cutting (n.)  Definition : Plasma cutting is a process that is used to cut steel and other metals of different thicknesses (or sometimes other materials) using a plasma torch.  E.g.:  E.g.: In this process, an inert gas (in some units, compressed air) is blown at high speed out of a nozzle; at the same time an electrical arc is formed through that gas from the nozzle to the surface being cut, turning some of that gas to plasma. The plasma is sufficiently hot to melt the metal being cut and moves sufficiently fast to blow molten metal away from the cut.plasma CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Plasma Torch CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Ionize (v.) / Ionized (adj.)   Definition: to cause to form an ion (v.)   E.g.: Nebulae contain very large amounts of ionized (adj.) gas. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Electron (n.)  an extremely small piece of matter with a negative electrical charge  Definition: an extremely small piece of matter with a negative electrical charge   E.g.: An electron has no known components or substructure. It is generally thought to be an elementary particle. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT
