SCRA Proprietary2 History After a nationwide outreach effort, the federal interagency Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office prepared the report "National Network for Manufacturing Innovation: A Preliminary Design," issued by the White House’s National Science and Technology Council in Jan In September 2013, the President launched the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership Steering Committee 2.0 (AMP 2.0). AMP 2.0 was a renewed, cross-sector, national effort to secure U.S. leadership in the emerging technologies that will create high-quality manufacturing jobs and enhance America’s global competitiveness. The steering committee, whose members are among the nation's leaders in industry, academia, and labor, was a working group of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. In his 2013 and 2014 State of the Union Addresses, the President called for the creation of a Nationwide Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) to scale up advanced manufacturing technologies and processes. He asked Congress to authorize investment—to be matched by private and non-federal funds to create an initial network of up to 15 institutes. Over 10 years, he proposed that the NNMI encompass 45 institutes. On December 16, 2014, the President signed the Revitalize American Manufacturing Act, into law

5/9/2015SCRA Proprietary3 Purpose of NNMI In a fiercely competitive global marketplace, innovation is no longer enough. Many nations are increasingly driving innovation to implementation through whole-of-government advanced manufacturing initiatives. Thus the federally backed National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) is intended to create a competitive, effective, and sustainable manufacturing research-to-manufacturing infrastructure for U.S. industry and academia to solve industry-relevant problems.

5/9/2015SCRA Proprietary4 NNMI Key Objectives NNMI consists of linked Institutes for Manufacturing Innovation (IMIs) with common goals, but unique concentrations. Here industry, academia, and government partners are leveraging existing resources, collaborating, and co-investing to nurture manufacturing innovation and accelerate commercialization. As sustainable manufacturing innovation hubs, the institutes will:  Develop advanced manufacturing technologies that will "lift all ships," creating, showcasing and deploying new capabilities that can increase commercial productivity.  Help businesses who otherwise couldn't invest in advanced manufacturing research, by bringing together the best talents and capabilities from the public and private sector into a proving ground for cutting-edge technology.  Build a pipeline of talent that can support advanced manufacturing.

We facilitate collaboration among leaders from business, academia, non-profit organizations and government agencies. Focusing on areas that include design, materials, technology, workforce and more, we help our nation’s 3D printing industry become more globally competitive.  Digital Manufacturing & Design Innovation Institute (DMDII) is the nation's flagship research institute for applying cutting-edge digital technologies to reduce the time and cost of manufacturing, strengthen the capabilities of the U.S. supply chain, and reduce acquisition costs. The DMDII will both develop and demonstrate digital manufacturing technologies and deploy and commercialize these technologies across key manufacturing industries.  Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow (LIFT) is an industry-led, government funded consortium. By reimagining processes and procedures, our highly linked and leveraged network is facilitating technology transfer into supply chain companies and empowering the lightweight metals workforce.

5/9/2015SCRA Proprietary6 NNMI Institutes  Power America, the Next Generation Power Electronics Manufacturing Innovation Institute, is developing advanced manufacturing processes and working to accelerate the commercialization of wide bandgap technologies. Power America will help reduce our energy consumption and increase our nation’s manufacturing competitiveness.  Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI) will provide nationwide open access to a network of existing shared research, development and demonstration facilities of premier universities and national laboratories located near targeted industry partners. IACMI will offer a rich network of advanced composite resources through partners in Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.

5/9/2015SCRA Proprietary7 Upcoming NNMI Institutes  Flexible Hybrid Electronics Manufacturing Innovation Institute (FHE-MII): On February 10, DoD released a solicitation for proposals to initiate and sustain a FHE- MII as part of the NNMI. The Government intends this solicitation to support the establishment of a FHE-MII that will advance the state-of-the-art in the design, manufacturing, integration of electronics and sensors, and assembly and test automation through technology platform demonstrations of complex flexible hybrid electronics on non-traditional conformal, bendable, stretchable, and foldable substrates.  Integrated Photonics Institute for Manufacturing Innovation (IP-IMI) will create an end-to-end integrated photonics manufacturing ‘ecosystem’ in the U.S., and will include integrated design tools for efficient simulation and design of integrated photonic circuits, domestic photonic device fabrication foundry access, automated packaging, assembly and test of integrated photonic circuits, and workforce development. Activities under the IP-IMI will enable universities and small-to- medium enterprises to participate in the integrated photonics revolution. This IMI will bring government, industry and academia together with the goal of organizing the current fragmented domestic capabilities in integrated photonic technology and better position the U.S. relative to global competition.

5/9/2015SCRA Proprietary8 Upcoming NNMI Institutes  Clean Energy Manufacturing Innovation Institute on Smart Manufacturing Notice of Intent (NOI):  Revolutionary Fibers and Textiles Institute for Manufacturing Innovation (RFT-IMI) will ensure that America leads in the manufacturing of new products from leading edge innovations in fiber science, commercializing fibers and textiles with extraordinary properties. Known as technical textiles, these modern day fabrics and fibers boast novel properties ranging from being incredibly lightweight and flame resistant, to having exceptional strength. Technical textiles have wide-ranging applications, from advancing capabilities of protective gear allowing fire fighters to battle the hottest flames, to ensuring that a wounded soldier is effectively treated with an antimicrobial compression bandage and returned safely. The RFT-IMI will serve as a public-private partnership between government, academia and industry to address the spectrum of manufacturing challenges associated with this technology, from design to end products. It is envisioned to support an end-to-end innovation ‘ecosystem’ in the U.S. for advanced fibers and textiles manufacturing and leverage domestic manufacturing facilities to develop and scale-up manufacturing processes.
