1 INNOVATION SUPERCLUSTERS INITIATIVE
EU-Canada Cluster Collaboration Jennifer Miller Director General Innovation Superclusters Initiative, ISED April 1st, 2019 Building a prosperous and innovative Canada

2 Accelerating Innovation Through Superclusters: The Canadian Context
Informed by cluster policy from around the world Innovation Superclusters Initiative is a ‘Made in Canada’ approach Federal approach addresses unique industrial, geographic, and technology challenges and strengths

3 Deepening Existing Strengths
Superclusters Initiative doubles down where Canada is globally competitive with the objective to: Deepen Canadian capabilities, competitive advantage and commercialization leadership Support industry-led collaborative research, development, demonstration, commercialization and other reinforcing activities in specific platform technologies Strengthen collaboration across the private, public and academic sectors, and align innovation ecosystem efforts Build Canada’s superclusters by fostering a critical mass of growth-oriented firms

4 5 A Bold New Approach $950M 50+ $125-250M
SUPERCLUSTERS $950M OVER 5 YEARS 50+ APPLICATIONS $ M PER CLUSTER Technology Leadership Partnerships for Scale Diverse and Skilled Talent Pools Access to Innovation Global Advantage Up to $950M over five years for selected industry-led innovation superclusters Industry partners match program contributions at least dollar for dollar

5 Canada’s Five Superclusters

6 Delivering on Shared Objectives
Supercluster Not-For-Profit Industry-led consortium of Canadian-based innovation partners Innovation partners include: Large firms, including MNEs SMEs Academic and research institutions Other partners incorporated and active in Canada Five-Year Supercluster Strategy Supercluster selects projects to achieve key policy objectives: Collaboration on R&D, Skills & Talent Drive Commercialization & Build Global Advantage Foster Critical Mass Program Outcomes Collaborative technology projects that advance Supercluster goals Build on ecosystem strengths and address gaps

7 Next Steps Superclusters will release their Five-Year Strategies, setting out their vision for long-term growth Kick-off of supercluster operations and engagement Selection of collaborative projects, including early demonstration projects Launch of ecosystem building activities Continue to identify key partnerships, markets and opportunities

8 Looking Ahead: International Partnerships
Over time, Superclusters will: Drive new collaborative relationships between academic and industry partners, with the goal of strengthening innovation ecosystems in Canada Incubate world-leading talent and technologies of global interest Build a global brand that will attract talent, investment and new opportunities to Canada To achieve these objectives, we will need: Exchange of information with our global partners on programs, priorities and opportunities, setting conditions for success Strategic relationships that meet the needs and priorities of each supercluster and its members
