8. What is the Long term Care Revolution?  Its an ambitious programme to stimulate and catalyse innovation in the long term care sector.  Its purpose is to disrupt the institutional model of long term care provision as we know it in the UK.  Its aim is to create diverse, vibrant, cutting-edge non- institutionalised products, services and systems that are fit for purpose, fit for the future, sustainable and responsive to public demand.  Its NOT about reforming what exists, but about replacing a 19 th century model with alternatives that reflect 21 st century living and advances.

Why we need to act  To keep pace with demographic demands, over the next 50 years residential and nursing home places will need to expand by around 150% and the numbers of hours of home care by around 140%. (Wittenberg et al, 2004)  By 2030 there will be 2 million adults over the age of 65 without adult children to look after them; 230,000 will be in need of more than 20 hours care a week and no informal support. (IPPR, 2014)  Long Term care expenditure would need to rise by 315% in real terms between 2000 and 2051 to meet demographic demands. (Wittenberg et al, 2004)  The Government Actuary’s Department (GAD) projects that the numbers of people aged 65 years and over in the UK will grow from 9.3m in 2000 to 16.8m in 2051, an increase of 81%. (GAD, 2003)

How we will catalyze change  Investing £4m in the Long Term Care Revolution National Challenge.  This SBRI competition is open to the full spectrum of organisations (large enterprises, SMEs, micro businesses, the Third Sector, public and private sector organisations)  Encourage Cross sector participation  Successful applications will attract a 100% funded development contract over a period of up to twenty- four (24) months.

Success for us means…  Innovative approaches in the transfer and application of existing, new and emerging technologies from a wide range of sectors.  Focus on the translation of research from a broad academic base in the development, for example, engineering and physical sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities, space, academic communities and bio-sciences.  Breakthrough products, services and systems that enable and sustain the individual’s right to age in their place of choice.  Clear and viable route(s) to market and the potential to be commercialised at scale.
