1 NYATEP Spring Conference May 19, Getting Ready for the Smart Grid: The Advanced Energy Center and Partners 's Role in Emerging Green Jobs Jim Smith Patricia Malone Office of the Vice President Economic Development Stony Brook University

2 The Advanced Energy Center Conference in November 2008 drew 1000 attendees with keynote speakers that included Paul De Cotis and Ed Reinfurt. The centers expanding state role in smart grid and how to prepare and transform the workforce to meet the emerging green economy will be discussed.

3 The Smart Grid will transform our electrical system
The triangulation of forces to efficiently use our precious energy resources, the Federal Stimulus allocation of $4.5billion for "Smart Grid" and Governor Paterson's drive to put New York State at the national forefront for Transmission, Electrical Distribution and Smart Grid implementation brings huge opportunities and significant challenges. The Smart Grid will transform our electrical system much the way the cell phone has transformed communications.

4 What exactly is the "Smart Grid" ?
How will it change our consumption of energy ? and how will it impact the Quality of power delivery ? What are the jobs and skill sets revolving around this new technology ? When will we need to fill these positions ?

5 What can universities and other institutions of higher learning do to prepare the current workforce, as well as underutilized workers, to form the talent pipeline?

6 Green Collar Jobs Working groups formed to include: workforce boards, NYSDOL, Community colleges, AERTC partners, trades, USGBC( US Green Building Council) Identify key groups to educate in “green” such as trades, architects, designers and engineers Identify areas to focus upon: energy efficiency, conservation, renewable ( solar, wind, biofuels, ) Educational resources: k-12, technical schools, community colleges, colleges, universities Credit and non credit programs: Certifications, curriculum additions and enhancers Gathering job data

7 Energy Museum Geared toward: incumbent workers and future workforce in energy related areas. Energy jobs will be part of our children's future. HIA Energy Luncheon turnout Number of platinum buildings ?

8 Participating Institutions
Academic Institutions Laboratories Industries SUNY Farmingdale – Fuel Cell NYIT – Solar Decathalon Polytechnic Energy research will be driven by an alliance of universities, laboratories, and companies.

9 "The Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center (AERTC) is a true partnership of Academic institutions, Research institutions, Energy providers and Industrial Corporations. Its mission is innovative energy research, education and technology deployment with a focus on efficiency, conservation, renewable energy and nanotechnology applications for new and novel sources of energy." 13 Preparing For the Emerging Workforce
Our Mission: Foster educational partnerships Provide comprehensive workforce training Leverage cost through funding Facilitate and promote innovative regional workforce initiatives emerging for research and development centers

14 To achieve transformation in how we
educate and train our workforce, innovate and commercialize technology, and compete in an ever changing global marketplace, we must realize that no single organization can have the impact that a network of regional stakeholders working collaboratively and strategically can achieve.
