Shutter island Character types : There are no characters in the opening title sequenc Camerawork : Wide shot and long shot

Freeze frame (in a dark room with handcuffs) could also signify being stuck or trapped. Establishing shot of Shutter Island shows where the film is being set.

Extreme close up of fingers, meant to give the audience a sense of unease and claustrophobia. As well as an extreme close up of a foot stepping on a pistol, this could represent a meaning of being trapped on Shutter Island with no means of escape. Point of view shot gives the audience a personal perspective of where the character is bringing us.

Sound Includes only non-diegetic music (classical), adds to the tension of the opening title sequence. Mise En Scene The film is set on Shutter Island which is an asylum for the the criminally insane. Props include: a book, a chair in front of the fire, a boot on top of a pistol and someone lighting a match whilst holding a match box. The fact that the narrative is set on a criminally insane prison which can signify a sense of being trapped, and this is also used when there is a gun underneath a shoe.

Title The titles are written in capital sans serif fonts, with white and red writing (the contrast between innocence and blood).
