 There are three main aspects or parts to all functional documents: 1. Structure 2. Sequence 3. Format

The structure of a functional document is the way the information is organized. Subtitles are titles underneath a main title. These can also be called headings and subheadings. Roman numerals or numbers allow readers to find information easily. Sections with a line of white space show different chunks of information.

Subtitles are titles underneath a main title. These can also be called headings and subheadings.

 Roman numerals or numbers allow readers to find information easily.

 Sections with a line of white space show different chunks of information.

The sequence of a functional document is the way the directions are organized.  A step-by-step sequence must be followed in order.  A point-by-point sequence can be followed in any order.

The format of a functional document is the way the information is designed and presented on the page. Bold, underlined, or italic type helps emphasize certain points. Margin width helps fit information onto the page and makes it possible for the eye to travel around information.

>>>Indentation sets off certain pieces of text. Color, drawings, and photographs make a document attractive or can assist with performing hands-on tasks. Fonts make a document more attractive, can set off a heading, or give the document a certain tone  Bullets separate the different parts of point-by- point information.

On the back of your note sheet, describe the following. Use your note sheet for help. 1. Name the document you have (map, recipe, manual, etc.) 2. Describe the structure of your document. Give an example of a heading and subheading. How is the information organized? 3. Describe the sequence of your document. Is it step- by-step or point-by-point? 4. Describe the format of your document. What is the design? Are there different types of text? What pictures are there, if any, and why? How does the author make the text easier for you to read? 5. Describe one thing you think the creator of the functional document did to make it clear and easy to read.
