What is a preposition? A word that relates a noun or pronoun to another word in the sentence They indicate direction, position, time, or location.

What is a prepositional phrase? A phrase that begins with a preposition, ends with the object of the preposition, and includes any words that modify the object. They will picnic (by the river). The cake was decorated (with twelve candles).

How do I find the object of the preposition? It’s the noun or pronoun that follows the preposition and tells “what?” The key is under the rug.  Under what?- rug to my uncle between the lines until next spring with twigs and grass to what? - uncle between what? - lines until what?- spring with what?- twigs, grass
