Homeostasis and the Skeletal System Pg 63

Homeostasis Homeostasis – The body’s ability to regulate its inner environment Keeping the body’s systems in the right balance Staying alive

What could throw off your homeostasis? Pathogen – something that causes disease (example: bacteria or a virus)

What happens if the body can’t keep its homeostasis? If the body can’t maintain it’s homeostasis, it can cause permanent damage or death!

Pg 62- Glue in the diagram of the skeleton and label: Skull Phalanges Humerus Radius & ulna Tibia & Fibula Femur Rib cage Spine/ vertebrae Clavicle Pelvis Patella (use the book pg 900)

Pg 62 Cell Tissue Organ Organ system Organism (body)

Watch the video and answer these 2 questions in your notes: 1.What are the 2 minerals stored in your bones? 2.How strong are your bones?

In the center of the bone is the red bone marrow. It produces… (3 things – look on pg 903 of your book) 1.Red blood cells (carry oxygen in your blood) 2.White blood cells (fight infection) 3.Cell fragments (help your blood clot)

Problems with Bones Leukemia – cancer of the bone marrow.

Osteoporosis – the bones do not have enough calcium and therefore become soft or brittle
