Presentation transcript:

HAGA AHORA Make a list of as many reasons/benefits of learning a foreign language—Spanish in particular. Once you have listed as many as you can think of, number the top three you see as most important in your life or in life in general. Respond on a blank sheet of paper in the DO NOW section of your notebook. Include your name, today’s date, and “HAGA AHORA: Day 2.” When finished, copy your “TAREA” in your notebook/planner from the left whiteboard. The Story of a Sign

Why even learn Spanish??? Why even learn Spanish??? Want a job? Want a pay raise? Want to travel abroad? Want to understand Latin music? Want to be able to communicate with others? By the year 2015, the Hispanic population of the United States will be well on its way to 50 million, with a steady 40% population growth rate. Spanish is the fourth most commonly spoken language in the world. Does your English grammar need some help?

Review of Classroom Procedures First thing you do when you come in… Where do you need to do if you are tardy? What needs to be the first thing you do when you return to class from being absent? What is the procedure for going to the bathroom? How will you know when partner or group discussion is over and all attention needs to be on the teacher? What happens if you have already received a verbal/nonverbal warning but the misbehavior continues? What about late work? Do “HAGA AHORAs” or DO NOWs matter? How do you turn in work? Who dismisses class? What is my number one expectation of you as students?

Spanish Namesssss!!! Choose a name that has NOT already been chosen. It can be similar to your name or can be one you simply would like to be called. This is now your name to me! Make a name plate with your Spanish name. Grab a blue sheet of cardstock and a marker and CLEARLY and LEGIBLY write your name so that I can read it. You can lightly decorate it if you desire by using other markers of those around you.

Let’s start with the basics… Spanish Alphabet Song! Spanish Alphabet vs. English Alphabet: What letters are different? Spanish Pronunciation of vowels: Spanish Pronunciation of vowels A, E, I, O, U

Spanish Greetings! Greeting in different countries… In America, we wave and shake hands. What about other countries?

Spanish Greetings vs. Farewells Make a T-chart… One side you will include “Greetings” and the other side will include “Farewells.” Leave room for the Spanish and English Translation Greetings Farewells

Greetings Hola! Qué tal? Bien, gracias. Así, así. Mal. MUY mal. Y tú? Buenos días, señora! Buenas tardes, Señorita Backstrom! Buenas noches, señor.

Farewells Adiós! Chao! Hasta luego! Hasta pronto! Hasta mañana!

Practice With your partner or trio, create a typical Spanish conversation. Use any of the words from your Greetings/Farewells list. Be ready to present to another partner group!
