What is the difference between a prescription drug and an OTC (over-the- counter) drug? Give an example of each.

Drug Misuse VS Drug Abuse

 The incorrect use of a prescription or OTC drug  Examples: ◦ using someone else’s prescription ◦ Taking the wrong dosage ◦ Taking a drug too often

 The intentional use of a drug without medical or health reasons  Examples: ◦ Taking illegal drugs ◦ Drinking cough syrup to feel buzzed

1. By mouth ◦ swallowing a pill capsule, or liquid ◦ Travels to the stomach and small intestine, then is absorbed into the blood stream

2. By injection ◦ Using a syringe and a needle ◦ Must be dissolved in a liquid ◦ Goes directly under the skin into a muscle or blood vessel

3. By inhalation ◦ Through the nose or mouth ◦ Enters the bloodstream quickly through the lungs

4. By implantation ◦ Surgically implanted or placed under the skin, where they are released into the blood stream

5. By absorption ◦ Enters the bloodstream though the skin or mucous membranes

 Buccal absorption ◦ When a drug is absorbed between the cheek and gums  Sublingual absorption ◦ When a drug is absorbed under the tongue

 A medicine that fights a specific illness or infection and can be obtained only with a written order from a licensed health professional

 Two drugs are the same and produce the same effects

 A drug that can be purchased without a prescription at drug stores or grocery stores

 Indication for use ◦ The symptom or condition for which an OTC drug should be used

 Side Effect ◦ An unwanted body change that is not related to the main purpose of the drug

 The stimulant drug found in tobacco products

 Stimulates the nervous system  Highly addictive  Dulls taste buds  Constricts blood vessels  Increases heart rate and blood pressure  Causes more premature death and disease than all other drug dependence combined

 The body’s reaction to quitting the use of tobacco products ◦ Craving for tobacco ◦ Anxious ◦ Irritable ◦ Restless ◦ Headache ◦ Difficulty concentrating ◦ Heart palpitations ◦ Increased appetite

 Tobacco that is chewed or snorted, but not smoked

 Tobacco smoke contains more than 4,00 chemicals  43 of which are known CARCINOGENS  A carcinogen is any chemical that is known to cause cancer  Most of the carcinogens are found in the TAR  Tar is a sticky thick fluid that is formed when tobacco is burned.

 Another dangerous substance that forms when tobacco is burned is CARBON MONOXIDE  Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless, gas that interferes with the ability of blood to carry oxygen.

 Smoking causes cancer ◦ Most people with lung cancer die within 5 years of learning they have cancer ◦ Also causes caner of the throat, mouth, esophagus, pancreas, and bladder

 Lung cancer

 Smoking harms the respiratory system ◦ Tar lines the lungs and air passages ◦ Tar harms the cilia (hair line structures that remove dust and particles from the air) ◦ Aggravates asthma

◦ Can cause CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMINARY DISEASE (COPD) – a disease that interferes with breathing ◦ Examples:  Chronic bronchitis  Emphysema – a condition in which the alveoli lose most of their ability to function. The lungs lose their ability to inflate and hold air. Cannot be cured

 Secondhand smoke – exhaled mainstream smoke or side stream smoke  Sidestream smoke – smoke that enters the air from a burning cigarette, cigar, or pipe

 Mainstream smoke – smoke that is directly inhaled into the smoker’s lungs

 Chopped up tobacco leaves sold as chewing tobacco or snuff  Causes nicotine dependence  Contains carcinogens

 Causes problems with teeth and gums ◦ Scratch and wear away teeth ◦ Causes gums to pull away from teeth  Causes cancer ◦ Leukoplakia – abnormal cells that appear as white patches of tissue
