HOW TO Conquer Public Speaking Fear: Break the Myth of Public Speaking 陳禹村 陳瑩恩 曾沛琳 張采崴

References Source: www. stresscure.com Dr. Orman “You don't really need stress...so why not get rid of it?” Relieve Job Stress  How To Conquer Public Speaking Fear

Outline Overcome the stress beforehand Prepare public speaking The IMAGE of a Public Speaker in the Process of a Lecture Benefit your audience Myth  author’s points  our own experiences Incoherence between title and content

Overcome the stress beforehand --Myth Thinking that public speaking is inherently stressful (it's not). Being fearful of potential negative outcomes (they almost never occur and even when they do, you can use them to your advantage)

Overcome the stress beforehand -- Principles Speaking in Public is NOT Inherently Stressful When You Speak in Public, Nothing "Bad" Can Ever Happen!

Overcome the stress beforehand -- Speaking in Public is NOT Inherently Stressful Stop regard it as stressful. Many people were initially terrified to speak in public. Yet they learned to eliminate their fear of public speaking completely. If they can conquer the fear of public speaking, so can you! All it took was approaching the problem in the right way.

people dread that something awful, terrible, or publicly humiliating will happen to them. Think in a positive way! (everything that happens can be used to my advantage.) Even if everyone walked out and refused to give me a reason, I could ultimately find ways to benefit from this experience.  use it as the opening for next presentation. Overcome the stress beforehand -- When You Speak in Public, Nothing "Bad" Can Ever Happen!

Personal Experiences The degree we fear depends on the audiences. classmates vs. strangers Think in a positive way really helps!

ADVANCED PREPARATION Vickie 陳瑩恩

Advance Preparation Over preparation! Why over preparation?!  reveals your unfamiliarity or insecurity of the subject  self-doubt of your ability to speak in the public successfully

Advance Preparation Wrong focus!!!  Try to give much information to the audience as you can.  Try to win the applaud of the audience. And it turns out…  The complexity of the information is unnecessary!!!  The audience couldn’t remember all the details!!!

Advance Preparation Only 2 to 3 key points are needed!  Key points function as reminder.

The IMAGE of a Public Speaker Tina 曾沛琳

MYTH:  To be a successful public speaker, you have to imitate somebody else who is extremely perfect.  Although you try so hard to please all your audience, they still criticize your performance very badly.

TRUTH: Just be yourself. Your audience knows who you are, they do not expect 100% perfection, and they will understand the mistakes you make. Your audience wants you to succeed, and humility and humor will definitely do you a favor.humor

DISAGREEMENTS: You can enjoy throwing yourself in front of a group without knowing specifically what you’re going to say. → the presentation will totally be a disaster. All Your audience truly wants you to succeed. → Some feel like tricks out of expectation.

Benefit Your Audience Vivi 張采崴

If…… Goal: Getting something from your audience. Myth: Trying to control your audience Result : Causing yourself to experience public speaking anxiety

Change the goal Goal: giving something useful to your audience Breaking the myth Result: focusing on giving as much as you can do to your audience

Thank you for your time !
