Notes The Nitrogen Cycle – Important for proteins and DNA. In order for plants to make use of nitrogen, it must be transformed into molecules they can use. – Lightning – Nitrogen fixation – Released by decaying organisms

Notes Nitrogen fixation – On land: Special nitrogen fixing bacteria transform the nitrogen gas in the atmosphere into useful forms (ammonium). These bacteria live in the roots of plants in the pea family (legumes). – In Water: Special bacteria in water also “fix” nitrogen gas into ammonium to be used by aquatic plants.

Notes Denitrification – Turning nitrate back into nitrogen gas. – Special “denitrifying bacteria” in the soil, swamps and lakes – Take in ammonium and release nitrogen gas
