Cycles of Matter The supply of matter in an ecosystem is limited, therefore it needs to be recycled. Matter in an ecosystem includes water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and other substances

The Nitrogen Cycle Nitrogen helps make proteins and is also found in DNA The ATM is 78% nitrogen, which is called “free nitrogen” but most organisms can’t use this kind of nitrogen. The nitrogen cycle is driven by bacteria

The nitrogen cycle Consumers eat things that contain nitrogen. The nitrogen will eventually become waste from the consumer. Decomposers break down this waste, as well as dead plants and animals, and return nitrogen compounds to the soil. Bacteria in nodules on some plant roots take in this nitrogen and “fix” it for the plant to use. This is called nitrogen fixation

The Oxygen cycle All living things need oxygen for cellular processes (CO2, H2O) Oxygen is released into the air by plants performing photosynthesis

The carbon cycle Carbon is found in proteins, sugars, fats, DNA, CO2, etc. Carbon can enter the environment when organisms die and decompose, or is released into the air by cellular respiration, or burning fossil fuels

The Carbon and Oxygen Cycle
Plants use the carbon during photosynthesis to produce sugars and starches Consumers eat the plants and break down the sugar and starches (cellular respiration) Plants produce Oxygen, animals take in oxygen Consumers release H2O and CO2 as waste products.

1. Draw, label and color each cycle 2. Finish worksheets from yesterday
