Presentation transcript:

The CCRP engages both Wounded SOF Warriors and their family members as Mentors. CCRP Mentors are those Wounded SOF Warriors and family members who are further along in their recovery and rehabilitation; they are matched with newly injured SOF Warriors based on similarity of injuries, military background, family situation, geographic proximity and other factors as appropriate. Wounded SOF Warriors and family members are recommended as Mentors by Care Coalition LNOs and Advocates as well as CCRP Advocates; many of our Mentors are former participants in the program who have successfully progressed in theirs recovery and rehabilitation. CCRP Mentor Training Modules – Part 001: Mentor Guidelines

A Confidant. Because you are uniquely qualified to understand the issues, concerns, hopes, and goals of a wounded SF warrior and his/her family members, you become a person that can be trusted and whom the participant can confide in. A Good Listener. By practicing active listening you encourage the participant to express his/her frustrations, expectations, and successes. Feeling understood is important. A Sounding Board. The participant may bounce ideas off of you and use your knowledge of the recovery and rehabilitation process to explore avenues for him or herself. A Resource. The participant may bring up issues to you regarding medical or emotional care, transition assistance, housing, career, or a variety of other concerns. You act as a link between participants’ concerns and the resources available through the CCRP and the Care Coalition to address participants’ issues. An Inspiration. Simply your presence can act as an example of what the participant can achieve with hard work and determination. Seeing a wounded SF warrior who is successfully managing his/her injuries can act as inspiration and motivation for the participant. CCRP Mentor Training Modules – Part 001: Mentor Guidelines

A Doctor, Physical Therapist, Mental Health Counselor, Etc. Although you are encouraged to share with participants your experiences with medical procedures, pain management, mental health concerns and other aspects of recovery and rehabilitation, Mentors are not part of the participant’s medical team. Concerns about the participant’s medical status should be shared with the appropriate CCRP Advocate. The Main Character. The Mentor-Participant relationship’s main focus is to lend support and encouragement to the participant. Even though it has been documented that mentoring relationships are mutually beneficial, bear in mind that it is not about you.
