Throw-in Awarded to Wrong Team (7-6-6 New) Clarified that when the ball is awarded to the wrong team on a throw-in...the mistake must be rectified before the throw-in ends. This has been the interpretation and stated clearly in the NFHS Basketball Case Book for years – now just stated in the Rules Book. This has been a long-standing interpretation and has been stated in the NFHS Basketball Case Book for many years. To alleviate confusion, the committee felt it should be stated in the NFHS Basketball Rules Book as well.

2010 Clarifications for Throw-ins

2010 Clarification Ball at Player’s Disposal (4-4-7d) Clarified that the ball is at the disposal of a player when: It is available to him/her after a goal. AND The official begins the throw-in count. This editorial change just clarifies when the ball is at the disposal of a player after a made basket to differentiate between live- and dead-ball situations for the purposes of administering penalties and granting time-outs. So to be considered at a player’s disposal, the ball must be available to a player after a goal, and the official shall have begun the throw-in count

Ball is at the disposal of thrower Start the Five Second Count

Throw-In Violations

Throw-In Violations Thrower shall not leave the designated spot until release of the pass Ball shall be passed directly into the court from out of bounds so it touches by another player (inbounds or out of bounds) on the court before going out of bounds untouched

Throw-In Violations The thrown ball shall not be touched by a teammate of the thrower while the ball is on the out of bounds side of the throw-in boundary line plane (except 7-5-7) Once the throw-in starts, the ball shall be released on a pass directly into the court before 5 seconds have elapsed

Throw-In Violations Thrower shall not carry the ball onto the court The thrown ball shall not touch the thrower in the court before it touches or is touched by another player

Throw-In Violations Thrown ball shall not enter the basket before it touches or is touched by another player Thrown ball shall not become lodged between the backboard and ring or come to rest on the flange before it touches or is touched by another player

Throw-In Violations Thrower shall not be replaced by teammate after the ball is at the thrower’s disposal (except 7-5-7) The opponents of the thrower shall not have any part of his/her person through the inbounds side of the throw-in boundary-line until the ball is released on a throw-in pass Thrower may penetrate the throw-in plane

Rules Myths It is a MYTH that: A thrower can travel on a throw in A thrower cannot step on the line It is a Backcourt violation to throw ball into back court on a throw-in

Team Control Factor

Team Control Team Control does not exist during a dead ball, throw- in or a jump ball or when the ball is in flight during a try or tap for goal You cannot have a backcourt violation on a throw in until player control has been established. When player control is established, team control exists

Clock Starts When the ball is legally touched inbounds Kicked or punched ball is not a legal touch Clock should not start

Timeouts Communication

Timeout Communication Always before a timeout is reported to the table, communicate where the ball will be placed after the timeout Communicate Throw-in spot Team that will get the ball Throw in situation that applies (Designated spot or Run the end line)

Resumption Play Procedure Throw in application

Resumption Play Procedures (Throw-in Application) Team A does not make thrower available after: Timeout Intermission after quarter Administering official Sounds whistle Place the ball on the floor at throw in spot Start throw-in 5 second count

Resumption Play Procedures (Throw-in Application) If violation is on Team A, repeat procedure if Team B if necessary If this continues Technical Fouls can result Review Rule 7-5-1 Do not let this happen!!!!
