A run-through of a BFM course created under the created under the BeST e-learning program and with the support of European Social Foundation

 Students are more wired, have access to more information and media sources than ever  How do we as faculty and staff adapt?

 Look from ‘technological determinist’ point of view; how media changes society and culture, and its reverse  Have them learn about how people think about the media and its role  Give students hands-on experience with new media tools and techniques that are on the cutting edge

 Moodle Website for communication ◦

 Audio and video that would entice students ◦ How William Shatner Changed the World”  ◦ Google video, assorted films and TV casts saved over years  PDF files created off of journal articles and news features ◦ Enhanced real-time update of class  Learning materials, study guides, multimedia resources, and assignments paired together

 Student evaluation forms revealed the following: ◦ Students liked hands-on learning: Google Earth, Xtranormal movie making and Second Life experiences were widely rated as their favorites ◦ Students liked the ability to read at their leisure ◦ Students liked having ability to look at course slides before and during face-to-face lectures ◦ Powerpoint presentation with voiceover was a class favorite ◦ Class was highly adaptable to current events

 Course scheduled for once a week ◦ Students would tend to drift off and put it low priority because of lack of in-class facetime with instructor  Problems with Moodle site ◦ Students claimed they could not access the site temporarily ◦ Lack of storage space for large files ◦ Online quizes were the largest student complaint  Podcast not popular ◦ Technical topic with no reference materials that fit the lecture was not worthwhile

 Integration with Twitter  Virtual guest lecturers  Thank you!  Suggestions? Comments?
