MASS MEDIA

We know print and electronic media Mass Media comprise/include:  Television/films  Radio  Newspapers /magazines/ journals  The Internet

 are a source of information – we get the latest news from it  are cheap an easily available  communication is mostly one way  their aim is to attract a large audience  influnce society and, in turn, are influenced by society

 information function - provide us with different kinds of information (on/about the world, politics, business, sports, the latest inventions etc.)  educational function – we can widen our general knowledge, widen our horizons  entertaining function - a source of entertainment

How can we obtain (get) newspapers? - we can buy them (at the newsagent´s, kiosk, newsstand) - we can subscribe to them - and they are delivered to our houses by a postman or a newspaper boy(girl) - we can read them on the Internet

 newspapers are published daily, at weekends  magazines – once a week or a month There are different sorts of articles  on economics, politics, social life, sports  editorials (giving the personal opinion of the editor about st)

The popular papers / gutter press/ tabloids–  contain shocking stories, especially about people´s private lives, crime, gossip about celebrities or disasters  tabloids tend to be more slangy in their writing style than serious papers  have larger circulation than serious ones  have big headlines to draw readers´ attention and lots of pictures

 There are lots of commercial channels in SVK, e.g. Markiza, JOJ, TA3 etc.  are financed mainly with money obtained from broadcasting commercials / advertisement.  In comparison with the state channels they broadcast programmes of a lower quality

 inceasing violence shown on TV,  bad language,  brain rot ( if your mind doesn´t develop)  poor physical health/obesity,  addiction,  it can damage your eyesight.
